D2 or 154CM for my upcoming Mini Grip?

Benchmades 154cm is easy to sharpen and will do most anyones daily chores but I have 2 Benchmades in D2 and it is not any harder to sharpen and always comes away scary sharp and seems to last a little longer in edge holding, but if your building a grip from the website, like rexromic said get a Doug Ritter in M390 for the same price and have a better steel. Any one of those will be a solid knife its just the resale prices that will be different, good luck.

I didn't like 154cm on my mini Grip. It is really hard to get a sharp edge. When it was new, it was exceptionally sharp. But now I can't get decent edge. And I can compare it to a 154cm of an Emerson folder. Emerson's blade is really easy to sharpen. So, disappointment here.

I use a combo edge D2 Mini as a work knife--meaning used all day, every day. I let it get dull and it is indeed a bear to sharpen.

I'm thinking about getting a 154cm Mini to replace it because of the sharpening issue as my other Benchmades in that steel have been a joy to own and use----on the plus side the knife has been dropped numerous times on a concrete floor with no ill effects--I thought by now I would have at least broken the tip. Ya, I'm tough on stuff--watches and knives have a tough time around me--surprisingly, I've never broken a cell phone.

I've spent a lot of time with my Sharpmaker on the knife and its sharp but nowhere near when it was new.

Personally, I've just found it easier to touch up 154. I have a D2 hunting knife that I no longer carry, because heaven forbid it gets dull while skinning. I just prefer 154 and v30

That is odd because BM's 440C and 154CM have always been very easy to get a good edge

Might be your sharpening equipment needs cleaning or replacement, your angle is off, or your technique needs some practice. Emerson purposely runs 154CM a couple points softer to make it ridiculously easy to sharpen a working edge on anything you might find laying around, rocks, sticks, sidewalk, anything really.

Same here. If you have some sandpaper (220 grit and 400 grit) and a true flat surface you can bring back an edge on just about any steel provided it's a plain edge blade.

Yep, I surely must blame myself.

I learned sharpening Spyderco Military S30V only after a year, with a lot of research. Even minor details matter and all steel are different.

But, on the other hand, some steels just seem to be easy to sharpen for me: Emersons, Microtech Elite with s35vn.

Hmmm... I can get Benchmade's 154CM hair shaving sharp on mini-Grips, Rifts, Barrages... They do heat treat their steel harder than some others, so that might be your issue. What is your sharpening setup?

There's nothing in skin and fat to cause D2 to go dull unless you're skinning 2-3 animals at one time and scraping bone along with the skinning. Heck, the Gerber Freeman in s30v I used to own could fully process two whitetails before needing to be sharpened, and it had a soft heat treat. Carry that D2 knife with confidence, sir! :D

Nothing wrong with 154cm, but I really like BM's d2. I am comfortable with sharpening, honing, and non-stainless steels, so those things may factor into your decision

I don't think you can go too far wrong with either steel. I do however tend to lean towards D2.
loving my Camp Perry Grip in D2 ,
Anybody notice he has number "one" of two hundred fifty?
Were you standing right next to the person making these with your catchers mitt on? ;)

I didn't notice that the first time. I just looked at his location though, and given the fact he lives in Portland, I would say he either works there, or has an in...
Beaver Creek/Oregon City is only a few miles from Portland proper :D
