D2 or S30V for BM EDC?

I like the looks of that magna-guide. Looks very convenient and simple to use. If I only want to spend the money on one diafold which one should I get? Will the fine and x-fine included with this package be fine? How much of a difference does the xx-fine make? Also, are there any advantages to getting something like a 6" diamond whetstone over the handheld diafolds? Easier or harder to use or anything like that?

If you want to freehand then the benchstone would be best. I freehand my folders on the diafolds. But, when I want to re-profile or bet a beautiful, factory-like edge then I use the magna-guide attachment. It feels a little clumsy at first until you get used to it, then it's very simple.

I'd get a MGuide with (at least) a x-coarse / coarse and either a coarse / fine or a fine x-fine (if they make one). You have to have the x-coarse to set the bevel on S30V or D2 - hard steels.

I believe Benchmade charges a little extra for a s30v blade, but that doesnt mean its superior. Often the extra step, work or properties put into a blade can just be marketing. Another snake oil formula? Either way though both are great steels and its unlikely you'll experience one better than the other.

OP - what did you decide on? I'm thinking of picking up a 940 myself and am leaning toward the D2 just because it's a little more unique I guess. I'd probably ship the knife back to Benchmade for sharpening, so that takes the pressure off of the D2-is-a-bear-to-sharpen deal.
