im about to purchase a new knife " spyderco para military" it is offered in both steels and i cant decide what steel to get it in. any suggestions?

S30V is better, especially since this is Spyderco.

I Am going to respectfully disagree with you, I like the edge retention and the foliage green G10 on the CPM-D2. Also Sep there has been dozens of threads about this, just go to the spyderco sub forum and you should be able to find some material that will help influence your decision. Good luck I'm sure you will enjoy which ever one you pick

Oh, the D2 is CPM? Then that might explain it.

S30V Will outperform CPM-D2, I've tested it myself many times.

I have had millies and paras in both steels.

I have very little bad to say about S30V.

Having acquired the D2 version only recently it seems to be perfectly adequate. However, although I cannot say this to a scientific certainty it doesn't seem to take quite as fine an edge as the S30V.

An S30V Millie is a slicing machine! If I had to buy one right now, I would get the black coated digi camo PE version. That's one spicy meatball!

If I may add that whichever way you go the Spyderco Military is one excellent knife! I have the Military in digi camo, s30v, black blade and I just love it. It's a big blade but is light and works wonders no matter what I throw at it. When we're in the kitchen and we need sharp for cutting veggies and such my girl loves using it as well.

I find my D2 Para easier to sharpen than the S30V, plus it is cheaper and is a sprint run, so to me there is no doubt, go green!

In my experience D2 has held up better than S30V. I've got knives of both metals from the same companies and will take D2 over S30V any day.

There was a thread on this a while back, and another before that. The consensus was D2 offers a great edge, with good stainless properties, plus it's a sprint run and will increase in value as time goes on.

I wouldn't mind one in AUS8 of even 6 if you ask me. I would choose S30V over regular D2 however I do not have any experience with CPM D2 I have read here on these forums that CPM D2 is notably better than plain D2.

I am somewhat biased against D2 don't ask me why it's probably an irrational flashback to my hard time trying to get a razor edge from an ontario RAT knockoff D2 knife with a bad edge to begin with (even slight re profiling of D2 was hard.)

The CPM version is supposed to be easier to sharpen and has a better grain (smaller.) I might give the CPM D2 a try in light of this and all the other above mentioned facts.

Both steels are close to each other in composition and construction, so it really boils down to do you want the one with the green handle or one of the other handles.

I have the Military in both steels and quite honestly, I can't tell which one is a better choice. They both get smoking sharp for me on the Sharpmaker and edge retention seems the same. Haven't been bothered by chipping, rust, or staining from either. I say go for the D2 while you can:)

MY Para in S30V has gotta be one of the best, most functional knives ever made... It is my 3rd Spydie in S30V... all I can say is I LOVE what Spyderco does with their HT on this steel... I'm SURE D2 is the bees knees, but I LOVE the edge retention and ease... and I mean EASE... of sharpening w/ Spydies S30V. There are a LOT of knives that I have liked over the years, but my S30V Para is just awesome... One of the keepin'ist keepers ever.
