D2 sharpening angle: 30 deg or 40 deg? Can D2 hold up well enough at 30 deg, what with it's larger carbides, or is 40 deg the way to go?

CPM D2 is a little different than standard D2 and I think part of the diff is the carbide size, if I understand correctly what I read about it. Anyway, I have no trouble with any Spyderco at 15 degrees per side, including a D2 Para and a D2 Millie. That's actually pretty close to the factory angles.

I should add that 99% of my use is for cutting/slicing. I rarely do any kind of chopping or really heavy work with my folders.

Thanks, Dale. I also don't do a lot of heavy chopping/impact-type activities with my folders. That's why I have fixed blades lying all over the place! And I figured CPM D2 could handle 15 deg per side, so I already went ahead and did it. So far so good, just a few little irregularities along the edge that need a bit more work. D2 is tough stuff, but it wasn't as bad as I was expecting to take the edge back a ways.

Mine is holding it just fine like all my other Spydercos so far!

Hey Peter that blade looks a bit shinier than factory. Did you do anything special to it?

My D2 Millie was quite a bit below 30 degrees included and has had no trouble. It's been used hard since I got it and there haven't been any issues.

I sharpened my D2 para at 30 degress with a 40 micro bevel..
I have used it to pry staples, open cement bags, whittle, Cut thick plastic straps, hack and much more..
Sometime dirt gets in the way too.;)
The edge will not chip at 30 with a micro added.... I tested it for ya..
The factory edge was just under 40.. But the new edge is a great improvement..

I backbevel at 8-10 per side and micro at 15 per side with no issues. CPM D2 takes and hold thin edges better than S30V, and as long as you don't go way too thin on the backbevel and microbevel at 15 or more degrees you shouldn't have any issues unless you are cutting metal.

OK, so far the 30 degree bevel is working fine for me. I'm tempted to do what Matt did, and add a 40 degree microbevel. But so far it's been good, so I'm not gonna change it right now. Thanks for the feedback guys.
