D2 Paramilitary rust issues...

Received my first Spyderco knife in 7 years last week, a D2 paramilitary. This is my first non stainless knife, and first experience with D2.

Receiving the knife my immediate impressions were that it's a sweet knife, razor sharp, perfect size grip for an EDC, and very light and easy to carry. I sentry solutioned the blade promptly and then carried it IWB for the first time yesterday.

Unfortunately, at the end of the day noticed spotting on the blade. What a disappointment to find the blade rusting so easily! Cleaned it up, but I'm thinking that I don't want to have to deal with that on an EDC. Now I am wondering why Spyderco would not have coated the blades on these. (I see that Benchmade only offers coated blades in D2, which makes sense now.)

Thinking of flipping this knife for something else with a more stain resistant blade, or maybe just keeping it for pocket/sheath carry only. Outside of this it's a sweet knife though.

Are you guys having any rust issues with D2 Mil's/Para's, and/or what are you doing to prevent it, or do you just use it and not care?

I haven't heard of this yet, but I'm sure D2 will rust faster than S30V on the normal para-military. Do you live near the coast or in a humid area? That could affect it a lot. I live around the Gulf Coast and all of my knives have to be some sort of stainless with a satin finish to prevent small breakouts on the blades.

That would be very disappointing to have that happen so soon. Perhaps others with the same blade will chime in with more help, J.

Edit: that's why, I just saw where you live :o

I haven't had any rust develope with mine and it has come in contact with blood on the tip. If you have oily skin that is also a negative in addition to what J's Knives-N-More said. The biggest enemy to carbon or a low chomium steel knife is body salt, especially sweat!

The D2 para I owned had some minor spotting also.. But it would rub off at the end of the day.. I used and recommend rem-oil..
Matt

Weird. D2 is near-stainless. I've never had a problem with D2 rusting. You said wiped it down with a Sentry Solutions product? Which one? Any chance the spots were something other than rust? Some sort of debris sticking to the oil?

Ok, you live in Florida, and you had it in waist band? What do you expect?

I live in Ohio, and in the summer I do sweat, and I carry mine in my pocket. No rust yet.

I've found that spotting will happen on D2 from sweat unless it's wiped down every day - and that includes the application of Tuf-Glide or similar.

If you keep the knife in your pocket rather than IWB, it should be fine.

If you're going to do IWB carry, I'd suggest trading out the D2 version for one that's a true "stainless".

These gentlemen have it right---I don't carry my more rust-prone knives in IWB carry on humid or hot days, or those where I'll be involved in reasonably high level of physical activity; sheath or pocket carry is far more practical for CPM D2 if it may come into contact with the humidity of Florida or sweat from that high humidity/temperature level.

Sentry Solutions Tuf Cloth is what I rub my 710D2 and Para D2 down with---it's worked thus far for me, even in the relatively humid Lake Erie summers of Ohio I have experienced.

Good luck. :)

I've had mine for a bit, and haven't had a problem with it yet. IWB carry with a nonstainless knife though, that's your problem. Pick up a Salt 1 if you want to do that. Rust free, 100%. :D

I've carried mine for about a month in pocket, no rust. Been hiking in the rain under rain pants, so had to be near 100% humidity on that trip, and I was sweating buckets.

Hey, I'm one town up in Boynton Beach and have a D2 Military for the past year+ that gets EDC'd regularly. I'm a sweaty guy and don't carry it IWB (my Tasman rides there every day though) but it has been subjected to plenty of moisture, just not sweat directly. No rust yet, but it did stain a bit when I quartered a chicken with it. I do wipe it down with an oil rag more often than my stainless knives, but I don't baby it. I'm surprised it rusted on you after one day though. If you're going to carry IWB down here in the humidity and salt air, I would highly suggest one of the Salt line knives. If you can deal with pocket carry only though, the D2 should be fine.

I have really good luck with the silicone impregnated cloths made by outers and sold fot about $2.95 at wal mart. Even my tool steels, basic carbon steels and steels like ZDP and D2 have no rust living here in NC. I even swim with my enduras.

If I get something corrosive on them I wash them off, dry them, and wipe them down. Mostly I just keep my fingerprints off them. Joe

Bummer. Mines still bright and shiny. I keep a coating of TufGlide though.
My other D2 blades haven't had any problems either.
My JYDII is not coated to my knowledge but my BM710D2BK is, obviously, but they also come without the BK coating so I don't know where you get the idea that BM only offers D2 blades with coatings...

My advice parallels with the others, use some sort of silicone impregnated cloth or coating.

That reminds me, I need to pick up another TufCloth...

I keep a silicone cloth in my BOB at all times - good call!

My paramilitary has a clip scratched up pretty bad, a stripped clip screw, G10 that has scratch marks, and a nice sharp unstained or rusted blade. Of course all the scratches on the clip were from me walking into things  and the scratches on th G10 and stripped clip screw came from me trying to remove the clip and bend it back into shape where it had got hung on a piece of furniture.

Oooh, I hate when that happens :grumpy: The couches and tables seem to attack only when you have a shiny new knife :D

Sorry to hear that. I have been carrying my Military for a year with no rust problems. As other have said you might want to carry it clipped on your pocket and not IWB.

Like I said in another post recently, I have been using my CPM-D2 Para the same that I would anything else, without any problems. I have used it on green peppers, apples, etc. I cut up apples whiles out for a hike and don't worry about it until I get home at the end of the day. I wash it with soap and water when I am finished, and I sometimes give is a little wipe with veg. oil. (since I use it on food I stay away from Rem Oil, etc.)

As for the Benchmades: I had an un-coated Benchmade 710D2, but traded it to my brother-in-law. He did not have any staining issues at all, used it on all kinds on food, until one day he cut a mango and saw it stain instantly. He sent me a pic and it is a slight stain - the kind you see only at certain angles.

Oh yeah, don't cut citrus type foods, nothing orange, lemons, limes, none of that stuff. Apples and bananas are safe, stuff like those are okay to cut up.
