you don't want to be accused of being a fanboy, but you'll call that to others? Give your head a shake kid. You layed on some pretty thick slander because you can't take criticism about a manufacturers choice of steel?

Jontan Quote: "On grinds, I found this in a thread from sometime ago, that may be of interest to some: "It is critical to note though that how the grind is implemented makes more of a difference than its type. Strider uses hollow grinds and they are very thick and are stronger than many flat ground blades. Look at the cross section more so than the curvature". Cliff Stamp....

Statements like these need to be taken in context. For a given tool's maximum thickness, primary bevel height, and thickness immediately behind the edge, any hollow grind will have greater potential for edge deformation due to impact and torsion/side loads than a flat or convex grind. Fact. It may or may not be an issue based on other design factors.

Additionally, the shape of the cross section (flat/convex/concave) DOES effect cutting performance: chopping, splitting, slicing. Whether the effect is positive/negative/neutral is effected by multiple variables.

A question concerning material choice: if you could have this axe made of any steel, with industry best heat treatment, what would it be? Why?

Hey Jontan, thanks for the very well thought out review! It sounds like a winner.

Thanks mate.

The proof of the pudding will be in the testing, right now it's just an awesome looking tool. Will be a shame to smash up the coating but I keep telling myself it's a 'user' and not a 'safe queen'!

I'll let you know after I've conducted some testing - ya cool with that bud?

would it change if you made it lighter but wanted similar durability?

Well I've been using it now for a few weeks and I actually think the weight is very well suited to the axe. Initially I thought this is too heavy but I'm not so sure now. I took the scales off (this took a bit of effort) and had a look underneath, there are holes where the screws go through (actually there's a full diameter sleeve that runs through the centre that the screws locate into) and there are 2 lightening slots. I took a pic and will post this when I work out how to do it.

Is there more area for lightening I would have to say yes, but does it need it? This is subjective as when I picked it up in the shop I would have said yes but now after doing tasks with it ie: chopping wood (all hardness types) and using the spike to smash some house bricks and other random stuff the weight makes it all very easy and there seems to be almost no shock transfer to the hand even without gloves.

Looks like they got their Sh#t together and have almost completly rebuilt the site, I like the look of this and that tanto they call mfk02 http://www.hardcorehardware.com.au/weapons/mfe01.php would you call this an axe? It looks kinda axe like I guess.

What's with the oh so serious warning as you enter??? I know I live in the most over regulated country in the southern hemisphere, we can't even legally own sling shots in Australia - I thought I was about to enter a porn site lol!

Pics and video to come (of the plataxe that is:-) - sorry guys!

Cheers
