I am interested in input from folks that are using knives with D2 blades. Specifically, how is it to sharpen? I have read that it holds an edge remarkably well. If so, how does it compare to other highspeed steels? Any downsides?

Thanks to all
Thom

One downside is it requires more care to prevent corrosion, since it isn't stainless. Other than that, I put a very nice edge on my 806D2 in about 20 minutes with the Sharpmaker 204, and a leather hone.

D2 takes the best edge I have worked with even when compared to ATS34. It may be a little hard to sharpen with stones and such but it will take a wicked edge. The real key is to not let it get too dull;) then it's alot easier to keep sharp.

Dozier-made D2 is the only D2 I've tried extensively, and it's my favorite steel for small/medium sized knives right now. It does hold an edge for an incredible amount of time, and is very abrasion resistant.

I did have some problems sharpening D2 on an Arkansas stone, but have had no problems on hones like the SharpMaker or DMT diamond hones. Wet/dry paper also works very well for sharpening D2. Robert was correct though. The key is not to let the blade get too dull before sharpening.

I've never had my D2 rust on me, but have had a small amount of patina develop after leaving the knife wet overnight.
