d2 steel...your thoughts

It's great steel! Holds an edge forever, pretty damn stainless, and tough as hell. Can't really go wrong with D2.

If done right its quite good. Real world from the swamp I live in. Doesn't really rust compared to many steels(including stainless) that do down here. Holds a good edge awhile. Not all that hard to sharpen. Pretty good stuff...

I echo everyone sentiments above, the most important thing with D2 is to never let it get dull which of your using it as a slicer it'll slice all day long, if you let it get dull, make sure you have decent size diamond bench hones and time to sharpen it.

I have a Dozier Arkansas Toothpick I've carried for over 15 years, the high hollow grind on the Dozier is a great grind for D2. My Queen medium Stockman in D2 is another great slice but the shorter blades are a pain to sharpen as its hard, (for me) to maintain an even bevel

I'd love to see a Sebenza in D2. :)

Great steel, and much tougher than it gets credit for. You'd think it would chip and break just from cutting paper if you hear some people.
The toothy edge works great for real work, not just cutting paper.
But yeah, don't let it ever get really dull

Hope you like your Brous. I have a number of Bob Dozier's fixed blades in D2 and have always been satisfied. I have a Becker BK-24 and at least one Queen folder in D2. I like the steel. I agree, don't allow it to get really dull. It took me a while with the BK-24 to get an edge I was satisfied with.

Thanks, it should be here in a day or too. So other than having to bring it back from totally dull it sounds like D2 is good to go. I haven't been able to find too many people that haven't been happy with it.

I'm not a very big fan of D2, but whatever Brous does with the heat treatment I like and like it much more than most other D2 I have used. I find the Brous Mini Division I have to perform pleasingly well, which I suppose highlights just how big a difference that the end result depends on the heat treatment. Whatever Brous is doing with their D2, they're doing it really well IMO. I think you'll like the knife. All of the Brous' I've handled have been of excellent quality and had blades with really good design, geometry, and consistency. Much like LionSteel and ProTech, Brous is producing production knives that can compete in the high-end prod folder market and offer more variety for users looking for a knife with a fit and finish in the ballpark of that of a Sebenza, IMO.

Some time ago there was another thread on D2 & someone posted a link to a knifemaker's page that had a great article on the steel. I can't find the thread & really enjoyed the article so if anyone remembers it, please refresh my memory.

Also, from what I've read (I haven't ever used it hard), D2 isn't "tough" in the same sense that S7 or 5160 is tough. It doesn't do thin bevels very well. It holds a great edge but I keep wondering if some posters mean edge holding when they say "tough". The article I mentioned above insisted that it is plenty tough with the right heat treat (its made for making dies) but didn't always get this.

I think this one:
