D2 steel

I have a heck of a time getting a shaving sharp edge on my EDC Queen, but it gets pretty sharp and it stays there. It is WAY sharper than knives in the pockets of friends who all carry knives...so Na, Na, Na!

I currently have three blades in standard D2. My BM 710 D2 came truly razor sharp from the factory. My Dozier came "scary" sharp. My Queen large Stockman wasn't as sharp as I felt it should have been, but about an hour on the workbench and it's also scary sharp.

I sharpen all of my D2 blades at a straight 15 degrees, and they hold an edge forever.

My Spydie Millie in CPM D2 was reprofiled to 15 per side, and polished to .5 micron with diamond paste. now THAT thing is truly SCARY!!!!:p

Are large carbides still an issue with the CPM D-2?

The carbides should be much smaller, but the carbide volume is still high. I found mine to take an edge every bit as sharp as S30V, if not sharper, when brought up to a .3 micron finish. I have had good luck on CPM D2 with DMT stones for coarser rebeveling work and slicing edges, Spyderco ceramics and Shapton Glasstones for Medium to Extra Fine, and 3M lapping film has worked well for putting on the final polish. The Shapton Glasstones seem to cut the cleanest and be the least likely to burr, but the edge from the Spyderco UF was whittling hair nicely, though they won't be as forgiving if you get ham fisted and will form a burr easier than diamonds or the Glasstones.

It seems that the edge on many factory knives is too obtuse. In D-2 it will take a while with DIAMOND hones to reprofile them. Once reprofiled you should be able to get very satisfactory results using a fine or super fine diamond hone.

Of course you could always send it to me..... :)

My 710 in D2 gets hair-splitting keen, but after I fist got and rebeveled it, I misunderestimated the amount of stropping it needed. Most of my previous knives needed only a few swipes on the green strop after the ultra-fine hone to get to maximum keenness, the D2 needed a half hour's worth of stropping to get there. I assume that reflects well on D2's edge retention.

Thunder, what kind of "green strop" do you use? I saw one (of that description) a few months ago for sale but didn't get it, despite a few people telling me to. Could you give me a URL?

Thanx
