D2 steel

Thanks for all the great advice.

I ordered the d2 mini last night after reading the feedback in this forum about d2.

Thanks again.

Benchmade Lifesharp Program. Send it to them for about $5 + shipping and let the factory sharpen it for you.

But if you do that all the time... You might as well get a sharpener that'll pay for itself eventually then, right?

My next knife will have either D2 or S30V. I'm thinking about getting one of those aligners to sharpen it, since I'm not particularly good at holding a steady angle.

What's the benefit of sharpening freehand over using a system that will guarantee you get a good angle? I enjoy sharpening freehand just because, but I'd like to know if there's any benefit.

Edge I make freehand is not flat, hands are not perfect instruments and in result I have more or less (probably less) convex edge. Not one with big angle on the very edge, but one with curved shoulders which decrease friction during cut. Also all this guided system does not really keep same angle near the tip. Also direction of the sharpening is different on different portions of the blade. You are limited to whatever abrasive manufacturer decide to support...

It is not feel right, just too limited. And if you check hair whittling thread - not too much results there for this kind of systems.

To be able to guarantee good angle you need (especially with this base) to spend one or two or three hours of learning. It is to me - like do we need to learn how to walk if we always can use wheelchair?

Thanks, Vassili.

Kershaw is another knife maker to look into if you're interested in CPM-D2. Very good stuff :D I have the Leek, JunkYard Dog II, Tyrade.

The D2 takes longer to get sharp, but once you have it sharp (like others have said) it's a beast.

The Leek is just such an amazing little knife when you give it D2.
