OMallys get totally paranoid over a few deadly weapons and three dudes all liquored up. Not sure why?...

Pauli, I am no hardcore biker, but I did a decent bit of off-road biking during college. I had a lot of luck with my Specialized bike. I made some simple mods to make it more comfortable...added a bmx seat and pedals. She works fine for the street and is really smooth off-road. But I am not a racer or long distance guy. My neighbor races bikes, and said all the big brands offer similar levels of bikes....just depends how much you want to spend, and which bike feels most comfortable for you. Good luck with your search.

I went to the bike shop today - checked out few bikes.

I'm not looking for an all out bike just something decent - what they showed me was 09 Specialized Trailhopper with upgraded hydraulic brakes for $900.

So thats how much I'd be looking to spend if I was buying new....

Sounds like a really nice bike Pauli...if you end up narrowing it down to a few bikes, shoot me a pm and let me know the options and how you plan on using it. I'll run it by neighbor for ya if you'd like.

LoL

I never anticipated that buying an mountain bike can be such a PITA...

Do your homiework Maine - then you won't be sorry

I'm on my third bike and know a little more now

No bike will be perfect for everything - just buy the one that fits the budget, your skills, and terrain. When you are 6'3 and 250 paying out the yang to save a few more OZ's ain't gonna matta much - ya know?

Go with good front suspension (I like Fox), aluminum frame (stiff so you can slam the jam), XT running gear and Hydraulic brakes - you can upgrade the rest later if ya have to
