Recommendation? Dad's Retirement Gift

My mom was not amused. It wasn’t an earring that looked like fish hook, it was an actual gold plated fish hook. Lol.

I guess after all those years of going to work looking respectable, he needed to let loose.

He had one good summer of fishing everyday, got sick and died of cancer a year later.
Not to change the subject OP.
Also I'm Sorry to hear about your Dad's Passing so soon after retirement especially. Cancer Sucs took my mom and dad. Well have a good one and be safe out there.
Now back too knives!

How about a Carothers or Winkler? In the case of the Carothers, you can purchase leather sheaths for them from a couple different people. The Winkler comes in leather, IIRC. The Carothers is my most expensive knife but I use it because I am pretty sure Nathan will fix it if I F it up.

Winkler looks solid but a little too plain jane for this gift.

Carl Colson has a sweet Loveless Bird Knife in amber stag in the Knifemakers fixed blade section. Take a look. He makes a regular hunter too. He does great work.

Dan Graves

Not sure if still on board. Makes beautiful knives typically in your price range. Forged Damascus I've seen. Not sure if works in other steels, might want something stainless for hunting, breaking down large game..

He might be worth a look. I've no personal experience as yet but heard nothing but good things and his work is heirloom quality by the looks..

Best of luck on the hunt.
Dan is still active - he has some new knives in the sale forum on a fairly regular basis. Great to do business with and his knives are very nice. I'm sure a phone call to him would be well worth the time. His knives are usually in your budget range.

I would also recommend that you take a look at Dan Graves. I bought one of his knives earlier this year and it is good quality at a very reasonable pice. The popcorn stag grip on mine has great texture and fits the contour of my hand well. The Damascus pattern on the blade is stag is eye-catching. The only negative that I can think of is that perhaps the sheath isn't of the same quality as the knife.-the leather is a bit thin.

Choose a maker first, then talk to them about steels.

This! So many makers specialize in steels that they are comfortable in working with... the steel in and of itself won't make or break the difference one way or the other, esp. from a quality maker and for a user who doesn't appreciate the difference one way or the othe...
Find a maker, and choose a steel that maker uses and has mastered, and you'll get the best qualities of that steel, and a top quality knife.

Well you guys and this forum cost me a lot of money! Have an order with Robert Erickson for my dad, a Gene Ingram Bird & Trout on order, a Lucas Forge Packer on order, and now a Half Face Blade on the way!

Oops!

Resistance is futile.

:)
