My dad is a hunter and a part of a search group and for some time he's been wanting a knife for putting down wounded animals when needed. Since I had an old German dagger/stiletto blade lying around, I figured I'd make one for him. The handle is Kingwood and leather washers. I made the brass guard from scratch as well. The knife is slightly Fairbairn inspired :). This is the most complicated knife project I've done so far and the fit and finish leaves a lot to be asked for, but the construction is solid and it feels great in the hand, so functionwise, everything is as it should be. All that's left now is some final touchups and then making a leather sheath for it.

Very nice knife, excellent work! But I would not want to get close enough to a wounded animal to put it down with a knife. That's what handguns are for.

Many years ago in Colorado, a hunter shot a mule deer and started to dress it out. The deer wasn't dead and kicked the knife into the guy's femoral artery. They found him bled out.

Thanks, everybody!

A handgun would probably be a great option, but that's a no go where we live. Usually, they use a rifle for a situation like that, but apparently in some cases it is more suitable to use a knife, especially when there's a dog involved. It is done with a thrust either to the heart or above the top vertebrae depending on what kind of game. You have to know what you're doing though.

Looking good! It's always satisfying to make something yourself and to gift, and receive such gift. Well done!

Thank you very much! I am pretty sure the blade is a manipulated industrial saw blade. I found it in a box a got at an auction that was full of blade blanks. Some good, some bad, and some unknown. It's more of a decorative piece, but I got a shaving edge on it anyway, and I made it to be rock solid. It just has no real functional use, except conversation!

Slipperyjesus,

I may be wrong, but it might be an older Ontario Sticker blade. The older ones had a hammered finish stamped into the blade.
They are excellent blades, we used to use them on the hogs on the farm, for that last part, after the bullet, before they were hung up.
or was that too much information....

Great edge holding ability, and inexpensive.
Still have one in the shop. Don't do the pig thing anymore.

And if you live where only cops are allowed handguns? Bleed the prey out before it can maim your artery.

Could be! The shape looks right, but I couldn't find any pics of old ones. It definitely holds an edge well, and passed the "smash it against stuff" abuse test.
