Daggers?

I've been interested in daggers for a while but I don't really know where to start. I also have a few questions regarding them:
1) What are the generally used for? They sure don't look like utility knives...
2) What are some good (preferably not too expensive) alternatives to the fairbarin sykes fighting knife?
3) Whats a good dagger to start off with? (preferably around 11 inches overall).

Note: I don't plan on using these for anything, I just want a functional dagger/fighting knife for collection purposes. I would prefer to spend around $100USD.
Thanks in adavance

The problem you may have is trying to import them without a special permit will be a problem
Double edged Knives and Daggers are not allowed in Australia.

the quest for perfect symmetry is what makes the dagger hardest to ground.
cheap daggers aren't usually perfectly ground centered at the blades spine.
so be quick to reject any dagger which don't perpendicularly mirror each side equally.
believe me, it's hard to live having to seeing a less than perfect dagger everytime you happen to pick it up...
anyway, there are a few classic military dagger patterns worth considering.
i would say a Holbein Dagger, the F-S dagger (all 3 patterns!), the V-42 1st Special Force dagger, and the Ek Knives M4; all of which in one way or another inspired the "creation" of newer but still very much basically having met the very same specialized purpose required from a military dual-edge dagger.

IMO daggers are good for 2 things only - opening letters and stabbing. They range from small boot knives to commando assault (not SD) knives and larger. Knives over 6½" are preferred for covert assault - shan't go into the reasons here. Best source I know of in Oz for FS and AF daggers is
http://www.pacificbladeware.com/bokermilitary - reasonable pricing and you don't have to go thru the customs red tape

Daggers and double edge knives are fine in Australia in most states to own, but they cannot be imported without a permit.

Don't worry about customs and laws. I'll do the searching for an Aussie seller, I just want to know what models i should look out for :)

Ok, I've managed to round it off to 5 daggers:
- SOG daggert2
- Gerber Mk2
- Boker trenchknife Mk3
- Boker Applegate Fairbarin
- Ontario SP3

I'm leaning toward the gerber right now since it looks so damn awesome and the price isn't too bad, but it looks quite fragile. Is it a full tang or half tang? Which one would you choose from the list? (I would prefer it if it didn't break if I dropped it on the floor or something. I'm not going to try pry a M1A2MBT apart, but I would like it if the knife wasn't too fragile).

I just received an interesting dagger from Bark River Knives. The Mountain Man Dag.

http://www.knivesshipfree.com/images/MMD_Aged_Bamboo.jpg

Overall Length: 9.875 Inches
Blade Length: 5.5 Inches
Blade Steel: 52-100 @ 58rc
Blade Thickness: .110 Inch

The knife came razor sharp on both edges, which is unusual for a dagger. While it could be used as a fighting knife, it looks multi-purpose.

Currently these knives are on sale at http://www.knivesshipfree.com/ The individual page is http://www.knivesshipfree.com/Mountain-Man-Dag

I understand these knifes are on closeout and no plans have been made for another run.
Bark River offers an amazing selection of scales for each knife they make.
Weight: 5.250 Ounces

Boker makes a lot of daggers but I don't like their name and have heard that their knives don't come very sharp out of the box.

What is it exactly that you don't like about the name?

I have a Boker Applegate-Fairbairn, and it's a nice dagger.

Oh- and it was sharp when it came out of the box.

Kind regards,

Jos

I agree, nice daggers. I'm just a little OCD when it comes to names and symbols. I don't know what it is about the name I don't like, it just sounds ugly to me. (Nutnfancy is the one who said they came a little dull out of the box when he was reviewing a Boker dagger on youtube, btw.)

Then by contrast, not only do Puma daggers have 440c steel and are hand made, I really like the name (being a cat person), and you get that cool emblem of the Puma on the blade.

I know Gerber makes a lot of daggers too, but that company seems to have really declined in quality over the years.

As for the ZT and SOG daggers I think they're not long enough. If you're going to have a dagger it should be long I think, it's designed purely for self defense after all. With a three and a half or four inch dagger what's the point?

I have older versions of the Gerber Mk I, Mk II, and Guardian. All very good knives. My most wanted double edged knife -- Randal #2. I've never owned one, but the EK daggers look like good knives.
