Forgive my ignorance, I don't believe its called this, but its the straight edge VG-10 version of the D'Allara...

Just won it on ebay for about £48 including shipping, which is about $100 for you lot over the sea ;)

Its about £60 ($125) anywhere else in the UK, so I expect I got a good deal...

So, this is my first spyderco knife... What am I to expect from this lil' beaut??

What sold it for me was the nice blade, but above all, I've never owned any lock mechanism quite like the ball bearing one that it boasts...

Opinions are very welcome! And any info about its performance, what tasks I can use it for etc.... :D

Im very looking forward to this USPS package :)

Cheers all!

Alex

I've never handled one myself, but I've heard nothing but good things about it from users. The only complaint is about how big it is in the pocket from some people. Some people also complain about how big the Manix is in the pocket and I have no problem with it. You picked a great knife. As for price, I believe we in the US get it for around $55-$65. I'm not sure if you did or didn't get it for a good price where you're at. It sounds like you shopped around, so you should be fine. Please update us with your experiences with it after using it over time.

BTW aren't those illegal where you're at? If you haven't already, you might want to also check out the UK Pen Knife from Spyderco. Spyderco got such great responses from their customers in the UK, that they made a US version of it. It's now one of the more popular models.

Thanks ignoramus, appreciate your comments. I'm looking forward to it... I just found this thread, http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=457712&page=2&highlight=d'allara

and now can't WAIT to have it!!

Yes, in the UK its illegal to carry on the street, but I would be using it on private property... i.e. my house

Shopping around is always best, but this time I just saw it and bought it on the spot, hadn't seen the drop point version, and loved it immediately...

Turns out that yes, its a good price compared to the UK anyways!

And the UK penknife looks great as well... I will have one for EDC outside of the home soon, just a little dearer at present :)

If you like "using" your knives instead of "oogling" them, you'll love the D'Allara.
Of course there isn't anything wrong with oogling them either... But you'll like it even more after you use it.
My blade already has love scratches on it, :)

stop your killing me! Nice to see a sense of humor around these parts ;)

Well, I'm sure I will love it.. its very smooth looking, and VG-10 is a nice steel... I've heard good and bad things about the S30V... I suppose its a mixture of how its made, heat treated and then application by the end user.

I like my D'Allara a lot. Nice size, good lock and is a handfull of knife. Not to small and not too large. I'd like to see more Spydercos with this ball lock.

the drop point d'allara makes a good blade for self defense inmop. the knife is not only sturdy, it can be inertia opened fast and easily.

I had a D'Allara but sold it. Loved the blade shape and size. Loved the handle shape and size. Did not like the ball bearing lock up. It was great to open with a flip of the wrist but closing was the problem. It was a slippery little devil compared to other types of lock up systems. To each his own. That is why Spyderco makes so many different models.

Nice knife, but TBH, you could quite easily have picked one up for about $65 shipped.

!!!!!! what?? Do the UK??? Dang I wish I'd have known that :grumpy: but never mind, its still lower than what I'd pay for it here!

Cheesr guys again

Sucks bad... oh well... Spyderco are so nicely priced anyways, that I can probably afford one a month, and still save... :)

But Mav, you are SO correct... rip of Britian... :(

Yep... totally agree with myself (and you)

EBay is our savior!!!!!!!!! only way we can get decent knives at reasonable prices.

Yeah, thats where I've bought all mine... bar my CGFBM, but that was direct from Ohio... ;)

Ebay is great, and Spydieguys have some great deals... I'm also looking at the Salt1 which I plan to give to my father... if it will make it out of my hands :D

There have been a couple of recent D'Allara threads and they got my interest up. I ordered a D'Allara DP last weekend and it arrived yesterday.

My comments:

1. Not a knife I would carry in my pocket. It's wide profile is just too much for me.

2. The knife feels very sturdy and is well balanced.

3. Fits my hand well and my hands are not too big.

4. Appears to be an excellent economical choice for a BOB or day trekking pack.

5. FRN texture is great.

6. Finely done BB lock. The only other knife I own with this lock design is the Dodo. I liked the BB lock on the Dodo, but the D'Allara seems to be a positive evolution on the design. Well done!

One of my initial concerns was addressed in one of the recent threads on the knife. I had looked at pictures of the openned knife and it really did appear that the tang/piviot hole was cut back too much...it just looked like the weak link from the photos I've seen. I was pleasantly surprised that there is a good deal of steel around the piviot hole. It's not a weak design...rather, I now believe it to be strong in the tang/piviot area.

So, the knife has been put away for now. It may make it's way into a trekking pack (maybe my son's since I'm very happy with the 83mm Manix in my pack) in the near future.

I'm very pleased with the purchase of the D'Allara....and I'm getting more and more discriminating about knife purchases.
:)
