Damaged my 1311 today:(

...I've seen a few 1311's that have roughly 1-2" diameter chips in the edge...

That's a significant statement--would you share some specifics?

For instance, how many is "a few 1311's" and what were the circumstances? Am I reading the size of the edge chips correctly as "one inch to two inch diameter chips" or did you mean to say half-inch diameter chips? Any photos? I'm not attempting to dispute your claim, but as it's outside the scope of anything I've heard regarding such large chips breaking from the edges of Busse knives, it would be helpful if you could add more information. It's a little hard to envision a 2" diameter chip out of the edge of a knife blade that's less than 2" wide.

Thanks,
Will

Yeah, theres another I remember from the Yard that happened while chopping wood. I seem to remember it was worse than the example I just linked, I'm trying to dig it up right now.

Hope this doesn't get taken the wrong way, I'm not trying to take away anything from the quality of steel made by Busse & Kin. Just trying to illustrate the importance of keeping an edge properly aligned, especially in thinner stocked knives.

Was it the guy whose blade broke when it hit the ground while chopping a coconut? That's the only other major failure I was aware of.

Thanks again.

I didn't take it that way. Was just trying to reconcile my own past experience with your description, so I wouldn't misconstrue what you said. I appreciated your clarification.

I would like to know if the other failure you mentioned was the guy who hit the ground while trying to chop a coconut and broke his blade--as I said, that was the only other major failure I've heard of on a 1311.

I still want some SR77 in my big blades. Edge holding is worse, maybe toughness is only a little better, but I definitely know it rusts less.
I know it's mostly personal preference, but I just liked that stuff.

Beat on it some more today, happy to report no further edge deformation, still cutting like a champ.
