I am inclined towards owning a damascus knife at some point in my life.

I am thinking of a bowie, rather than a folder. Well, for personal reasons, I feel a damascus bowie is a REAL knife!

I could be wrong by other people's standards but I am of the opinion that if a guy wants to own his first damascus, then it should be a bowie.

Any dissenting remarks?

Not from me ;)

My first damascus knife was also my first custom purchase. It was a Howard Clark bowie.

Now the hard part is whose and what style? :D

Actually haven't gotten around to a damascus bowie yet! I think my first damascus piece was a Bud Nealy Pesh Kabz.

WISE decision!
Your biggest problem is stated above....WHO.....and HOW MUCH!?
You can spend anywhere between $300 and $10,000!!

Here is a pic of my damascus bowie!

Bruce Evans (Beknives) made it back in the spring & I couldn't be happier :)
He calls it 'Wood Grain" damascus.

Enjoy your quest, it's half the fun!
And yes...it should be a bowie ;)
Ebbtide out.

I don't think that you are wrong in wanting your first damascus to be a bowie, but IMO it sure doesn't have to be. My first damascus will be a knife from Mike Snody and my second is already ordered and will be a folder from Kit Carson.

My first real damascus knife was this big bowie by Craig and Adam Steketee.

It's a big American knife and I love it. :) Relatively inexpensive too.

Wow, I really like that one, Wulf. What're the specs on that (size, weight, balance, etc.)?

Care to share the price? (email is okay, if you don't want to post it)

Wow! There are some very fine looking pieces showing up... I love it!:D <p>Lets have some more eye candy!:)

JB - the blade is just over 10", forged in a subtle ladder pattern by Adam Steketee, ground by father Craig. It's 1 13/16" wide at choil, 3/16" thick, and the damascus "twist" guard is 4" wide. The handle is large piece of Sambar stag with Stek's signature nickel silver and buffalo horn spacers finished off with a damascus buttcap. The handle measures 5 3/8", and the overall length is 15 11/16"

If I remember correctly, I paid $275 for this knife on E-Bay. The same knife, if made by an ABS MS, would likely fetch 3 times that. Maybe more. I don't know if Stek's knives would pass the ABS' tests, but I have heard that they handle hard use extremely well.

Craig sells knives on E-Bay all the time so they're pretty easy to find.

Narruc1 - want some more eye-candy? Check out this damascus

Provided we all make it that far (Christmas or so), I have something very special cooking with that same Persson damascus, Wulf!

Sounds verrrrrrrrrrrry interesting Brian.

Have you seen this one on KnifeArt.com? It actually looks very similar to mine - the biggest difference being that that one's actually for sale. ;) Conny forges some of the most intricate damascus patterns I've seen. I saw a large bowie he had on his table at ECCKS that absolutely blew me away! I can't wait to see what you've got brewin'. :)

i lived in penang in 1971 i was thriteen, great place, friendly people, hope to go back some day. anyway you might look for other smith's around. i could have bought some stuff, swords, knives, but i had no idea what i was looking at. LOL did'nt look bright and shiny like the u.s.a. made knives i had. it was dark and rusty lookin' :barf: LOL take care

Conny's damascus is awesome. When Wolf initially posted his knife a couple of months ago, I started foaming can not wait to see what Brian and Conny have dreamed up.

John Etzler posted a couple of new ones today and since we do not talk about him much around here what the heck. Pretty awesome also.

Wow Wulf, that is gorgeous!<p><strike>Who is the maker of the Damascus?</strike> :)<p>I found out, and I'm thinking very seriously thinking about getting one.<b>Conny is very talented!</b>:)

Actually, I was going to buy the BladeArt knife from Larry, who had descended on Conny/Roger Bergh's table seconds after the show opened and bought it out from under me. My good friend Zaza saw me talking to Roger about it, and said, "You know, I bought a blade from Conny made out of the same steel - you want to take a look?" There went Larry's sale (Zaza is a SHARK)!

So there you have a large piece of this particular puzzle. To further whet your appetite, Zaza will be doing his trademark filigree, but the special handle material that you rarely if ever see Zaza use is so fantastic that he is planning on keeping it subdued. Oh yeah - the blade is about 9" - a big honkin' Zaza! This one is really going to blow yer hair back (provided I find a job between now and Christmas so I can pay for it)!

Wulf's knife is multi-bar composite damascus made by Swedish blade smith Connie Persson, winner of the Best Damascus award at Blade Show '99. Really amazing work.

Gus, the second Etzler knife is incredible! I justed checked John's site, where the heck did you get those pics?

Brian - I actually bought mine from Larry. He said it was his favorite piece out of the batch he picked up at ECCKS.

Speaking of Bergh, he had some amazing work there as well, including an axe and a sword that just about made me faint when I saw it. His firecracker patterns are very similar to Conny's. I hope to have the priviledge of owning some of his work someday as well.

One of the daggers he sold at the show is currently available for sale on BladeGallery.com here along with the axe and another stunning sword.

By the way, it just occurred to me that this thread seems to be evolving into a "topic of the week" type thread much like that which was discussed here a few months ago. I'm enjoying it tremendously!

And Brian - it sounds like you have quite a project in the works. Congratulations on your assembly of these two fine makers for what will likely be one of the most exciting collaborations of the year!
