Buying Damascus bladed knives is one of the most frustrating endeavors one can be faced with.
Just a few years ago they were prohibitively expensive. Now they can be had for well under a
hundred $$$. And no one advertises layers, Rockwell Hardness or steels. And since most are imported,
you can forget getting any real information from a manufacturer's website. MCUSTA and Bear & Sons
are exceptions. I've heard good things about MCUSTA, though I've never seen one. As for Bear, it
makes excellent knives, but its Damascus isn't drop-dead beautiful. No swirls and little contrast.
Still, it's very functional.
I think it safe to say that the beautiful Damascus that is quality made will tend to be very expensive.
Cheap Damascus can be made beautiful, but it won't really be all that functional.
Since I love Damascus steel, I'll keep the knife store you mentioned. Not many on this board seem to
be really into it. Pity.
This Boker Damascus is beautiful, but way expensive, like
$600+. Ouch.
