Don't be! The great thing about damascus steel is the ability to re-etch it and get exactly the same look back. Use the hell out of it, scratch it all up, make it work for you, and then get the look right back with some ferric acid. It's not a painted on finish, it's what the steel actually looks like. :D

If I didn't have some serious looming money soaks these next couple of weeks...
