Damascus coloring like Tony Metsala

USA Knifemaker sells some Tony Metsala damascus bolster material with great color. How does he do this?

If you want to get an "engraved" look, but not necessary. As well there are a couple of other colours you may get, like goldish- yellow and maroon . Frank.

Thanks Frank and Chuck! Could you use this process as your last temper? Or does it need to be only for a brief time.

I mirror polish and then heat color. Make sure your parts are clean. The color is an oxide layer that is very thin but looks nice. Eventually after handling the color can rub off.

Different colors correspond to different temperatures. Google oxide colors in steel and you can print out a list that covers every color.
