Greetings everybody.
Just finished this one up.

Took me forever to get decent shots though. Any photo people know how to get a good white balance setting? Tricky tricky. Any-who...on with the pictures.

Specs:
13" OAL, 7.5" tip to collar.
1084 and 15n20 Damascus steel made with Deker
Brass and Mild fittings
Curly Maple Handle

Nice job. It may be the photos, but the habaki seems oddly out of place on a knife like this. I really like what you did for the butt plate.

I'll offer some constructive comments on what I see from the photos.
1) As I said, the habaki is out of place on a western style fighter. It draws the observers eye away from the other features. Replacing it a with simple brass seppa might have worked better.
1a) The ricasso is accentuated by the habaki, and is also too long. It makes the gap between blade heel and guard look huge. If it was the size of the habaki, or even a little less than the habaki, it would balance better.
2) The trapezoidal butt plate is very nice. Probably the best feature on the knife, besides the blade, of course.
3) The guard might blend better if it matched the butt plate shape. I think brass would have been a better choice than mild steel. It would have carried the bolster/guard/habaki look to match the butt plate. If the ricasso was shortened to have the habaki fit it fully ( no exposed ricasso), and the guard was brass and shaped to match the butt plate, it might have made the habaki work nicely. Sort of an east meets West fighter.

Hey all,
thanks for the comments and constructive criticisms, they are always welcome. This one was definitely a bit different, something I’ve never done before. I figured the collar would garner some criticism—which is fine! I was going for a long, sleek look, as you pointed out Stacy.
As far as the guard goes, I actually made a brass one at first, but it just didn’t work out very well. It all blended in—too much brass I thought, so I changed it to some mild.
Thanks again, hope everyone’s holiday weekend is going well.

Jake
