damascus etch contrast

Coffee is not the best on stainless, maybe if you leave it in for days. Never tried that. I use Ferric chloride (in solid state) that I dissolve in vinigar. So no water in the solution. Some stainless steels will color a very dark grey while others stay bright (n690 and D2 for example turn dark grey). Don't know what AEB-L will do.

Apparently my explanation is not clear. What I meant is, don’t use Ferric that is already in a liquid state. Or don’t add water to the mix, because the 97 to 3 percent ratio of the vinegar will change.

I've found that fresh ferric seems to work better on stainless dammy too. If I'm doing something out of Damasteel or Hoss's steel I mix up a new batch. Not tried the vinegar.

I tried adding vinegar, but it doesn't seem to keep as long as just plain FC. It did seem to etch a bit better/faster.

Quick update. Got them back from HT and did a quick pass on the grinder to take off the couple thou of bark that Devin mentioned.
They etched to a much darker contrast.
