hey guys,

i have a question for you all: is damascus steel good for edc use or not? as almost all my knives i buy to use i would like to know if damascus steel is good for it or not.

thanks guys.

It can be. There are so many different kinds of damascus done slightly differently by each maker that you really would need information on the specific damascus you intend to use.

id say in a nutshell yes, now this does not cover san mai damascus (IE Mcusta/ Santa Fe Stoneworks with damascus and a VG-10 core), or etched steel, true damascus should cut wonderfully. now damasteel and the patterned damascus i have no idea as they seem more like decoration steel then practical IMO

I heard some damascus blades are brittle....and sometimes the "damascus" isn't really "damascus".

To my knowledge, Damascus can be used for EDC option.
some say it's brittle, some say it'll rust
and I heard that they (knife makers) even use nikel in damascus steel to make the layers, "damascus look", or make it more pretty, nikel is not cutting tool's material.
So to me, damascus is more of a collectible steel.
but it can be used in edc blades ;)

It can be very good for a using knife but it depends on what steel combinations are used, how they are heat-treated, how clean it is of impurities, and also what you want to use it for. at least one of the steels in it will probably be a high-carbon steel, to contrast (darker) with the lower-carbon steel (lighter). High-carbon steels are easier to sharpen but rust more easily. He makes some designs for Laci Szabo so he must be a competent bladesmith. you could email him and ask about that particular knife, looks like his email is van@www.thudknives.com

The Stainless Damascus made by Devin Thomas has held up very well for me thus far.

@ Dao.HUng_105 - Like fishface said it depends on the steels used. though there are stainless damascus and carbon ones. the stainless depend on nickel inclusion in the steel (not chunks of nickel but actually stirred into the steel as it were) for the acid bath to pronounce the color otherwise itll appear just like any other steel until under close observation

@ HUntBomb - the faux damascus you were referring to is either A. printed (basically a coating not actual layers) B. etched (cutting designs into the steel instead of layers, though you still need the acid etch for the color to stick out) or finally C. Damasteel (D. ? E. Profit)

Wow
that's the hell of a knife man
I can't help but to look at it...does she hold an edge for a while?
BTW, does the thumb stud have the problem? you know, volcano issue?

I believe William Henry's damascus with VG5 and ZDP at the core can cut just as well as their normal counterparts. However, one thing that concerns me is the corrosion resistance of damascus. I'm pretty hard on my knives, sometimes not doing much more than wiping the blade on my shirt after cutting into fruit.

My skyline with the Alabama damascus holds an edge great !
That's interesting...
I was just wondering if Damascus increases edge holding ability or not.
so, does your DAM Skyline rust?
Do you know which kind of steel it's made of?
I personally think that is some kind of Sandvik like 13c26 or 14c28
:-?

It's carbon Damascus not stainless and it's made up of something like 500 layers of (52100, 203E, 5160 and 15N20.) No rust so far but I'm pretty good at wiping the blade down with oil every now and then !!

I have a medium size Boker damascus folder that I carry somtimes. The blade was made in Germany and made the way damascus used to be made.....several different
processes and takes anywhere from 18 -24 hours to made.

Thank you!

Hasn't seen as much use as my s30v 21 yet, but so far it's holding up nicely and doesn't need any maintenance past a natural leather strop.

I don't have any issues with the thumb stud. I find the Large models are easier to manipulate than the small as far as the studs go.

great to hear it tho, wish I had one :P
and I heard some said that the color on the blade with fade away with time, so some guys think that it's fake damascus

dude that helps alot, no wonder why it doesn't rust :p
