i was looking at some of Don Hanson's knives and this one caught my eye.

I realize its a Damascus, hamon combo but what are some of the tricks in the finishing or etching that create such a dark hamon and Damascus pattern on the rear 2/3rds, while leaving almost no pattern on the edge?

This interests me a lot and i would love to know some of the intricacies of creating an effect like this.

If anyone is willing to enlighten me i will be greatly appreciated (feel free to got into as much detail as you want)

thanks

Jason

It looks like the whole blade was polished to show the hamon then a block or stop was applied to the hamon area at the bottom then the blade was etched. But the only way to tell for sure is to ask Don.

The damascus pattern just didn't show much in the hardened part of the blade. Do in part to the steel mix and high layer count. Low contrast, low alloy, no nickle in the steels used. I've done about half a dozen of these and just finished another.
