Hi guys, I have a fun project on the go, but with these materials I want to get it right. I'm not sure how deep I want to etch the handles. I'm mostly sure which blade I'd like to finish it with though.
I'd appreciate input on which combo would look best as once I've etched it deep, I'm not going to be able to go back.
I mentioned the Holy Blade Damascus 560 handled knife to Leroy and he's said he's done one already which I would like to see as he also said he does not have a photo of it.

Who has Leroy's Damascus handled 560 style knife ? I'd love to see a photo

I tried it with a factory damascus blade and a Muriatic Acid etch on the handle. Is it too light? Should I do the blade the same or dark like the knife on the bottom?
Should I etch both dark or just the blade or both light? Sometimes I spend more time being indecisive than working so opinions would be appreciated and will likely save me some time banging my head :)

P.S. very soon I will post dillemas like this in a hosted Knifemakers Forum

If it were my knife, I'd like to see the handle deeper etched and darker. I'd use the hole blade and keep it a lighter color than the handle for contrast. I'd also mill out the handle so the screw heads were flush.....I just don't want to feel the screw heads with my hand and to me would look better.

DEEP etch that handle :) DEEP etch the blade :) seamless from tip to but would be cool... Black fasteners if possible ;)
.02 cent...fileworked before etch???

ok here is the one Leroy did for me

it is owned by another bcci member now from a trade and here are two others Leroy did for me

side note there were ONLY 200 blades made therre were no extras on that order..
so every blade like that you see means one less knive that come with them..

have seen one or two 186 models with holey blades in them at the shows
tho that is a easy do ...
so with yours there are apx 14 of the 560's with holey blades
ugh ..
there were 3 or 4 factory ones made at post falls as
"gee ...lets see what this looks like" kinda thingy
one of which i have now ..
the others, i do not know were they went to .. buck employees i think

as to a damascus handled 110 or 560
that has been on Leroys list to do for me for over 3 years now
he has the damacus blade and materal from the same sorce the blades come from
so it will match :)

i think i might get it some time ...when he has time again:fatigue:
he is after all a very bussy man

as to your knife, it looks great
light or deep etch... both look good i think
but
i think the blade and handle matching would be a improvement or atleast 'neater'
but the stainless blade does look good
and i like the rased rivets!! there is some one at buck that likes them also
kinda reminds me of a pluma with the rased heads
you are the 2ed one i know of thinking of these

Wow Dave, you are one knowledgable fellow with quite a collection! Thanks for the pictures, info and compliment. I've seen the holey bladed 110's, they originally came in an Elk Stag knife correct? I have yet to find one for my collection.
It's been a fun project so far, the acid vapour stained all the things adjacent to my bench, even though I had good ventilation!
Hopefully it'll be done soon, but I'm guessing at least a month as I need to send the blade (and handles) for etching and heat treat.

So I received the blade back from Leroy, he did the grind for me as I was not confident to do it, nor did I have the proper machine. I finished heat treat and etching yesterday with good results. Went with the deep etch as you guys suggested. Heres the nearly finished product. I am keeping this one. Thanks for the advice guys.

The etch looks GREAT Jerad. I could see why you would want to keep it:D

I like JB's suggestion of countersinking the fasteners.

My opinion is that the finished knife looks wicked!I love the deep etch and the whole knife flows from butt to tip.great job!

Thanks again guys for the input and compliments. I agree the dark etch is nicer. Thanks for looking :) :)

Thanx for showing us your completed project, it is absolutely beautiful.
I've come back to look at it several times now.
Well done Jerad!

I'm afraid to try it!
You don't really feel them when holding it though.. :)
