For Sale – Birdseye Burl and Damascus Hunter

BirdseyeHunterComp.jpg

A full sized hunter, in my “three burl” theme – Maple, Box Elder and Amboina. This beautiful wood adorns some striking ladder pattern Damascus. I made the handle area a bit thicker than I normally do and it really fills the hand for great control. And the tapered tang creates the balance at the first finger choil. Don’t let the “purty” fool you…this piece is flippin’ razor sharp and ready for the field. She bit me once coming off of the grinder and again when she was coming off of the diamond stones. She is aggressive. This is the only piece of birdseye that I was able to get off of a large burl slab that I cut into blocks for stabilization. I held onto it waiting for just the right blade, and here it is.

I have a lot of Damascus knives out in the field working. They really don't take any more care than a good high carbon steel blade does and if they're heat treated correctly, their edge holding ability is right up there too. I do my own heat treating so I'm consistently testing each blade before they go up for sale. Use them, clean them, dry them, oil them once in a while - that's all there is to it.

I'm making a few more pieces available online because some of the shops in Aspen, Vail, etc. that are carrying my pieces aren't getting their normal tourist traffic this summer due to the economy. Their loss is your gain because (with their permission) I'm selling them for what the shops pay so I can move them - after all, there are still bills to pay. ;) Note: I've posted this piece in a few locations online so the first "I'll take it" gets it. So if you're interested, don't wait.

Hi Paul, and thanks.

Maybe I should consider a "Lay Away" program. Hmmmmm? Ah well, your other pieces should be there on Monday so that should make you feel better.

Charlie, thanks for the comment. From you that means a lot. I was able to cut the most amazing burl blocks from that large slab but this was seriously the only one that was 'birdseye burl' which as you know, is way different than regular birdseye maple. I held onto it waiting for just the right blade. Sometimes you make a knife and it turns into one that you really want to keep for yourself. This is one of those. It's pretty but with a dark side that wants to be out in the wilds cutting things up. That reminds me...I better go change the band aids I got when I put the final edge on her. :D

Take care guys and God Bless

Beautiful. Absolutely Beautiful. The triple burl is sheer genius. Will you and your wife adopt me? lol
