Hi I would like to know when a bladesmith buys a billet from a damascus maker like robert eggerling, delbert ealy, devin thomas ect do they forge them to shape or do they do stock removal im talking about carbon damascus.
It can be either. There are damascus billets that are meant only for stock removal, and there are those that can be forged. Most bladesmiths forge their own damascus.
The patterns made by the people you mentioned I would think are for stock removal. They have very distinct patterns that would most likely be destroyed by the forging process.
