Damascus integral tag-along

Nick - Thanks for doing this.

If you don't have "3M 4000x grit polishing cloth" what would you use to remove the oxides?

Thanks,

Peter

Hmm, my uploaded photos keep coming up as a red X. I deleted them from my fototime and re-uploaded them, but they're still not showing up. :grumpy:

Peter- if I didn't have the pink 3M cloth... I would order some. ;) Seriously though, I'm really not sure. It's taken a lot of trial and error to come to the process I use now, and I really don't know what, if anything, could be substituted there. Powdered abrasives would most likely sand the valleys as well as the peaks of the damascus topography, and that would take away a lot of the contrast. Sorry I don't have a good answer for you.

Carl- Um.... #3 on a Mark 300.... :) I just run the thing like they showed in the video I bought- I think it maxes out at 36 volts, but I wouldn't bet my life on that, nor do I know where #3 sits on that scale.... somewhere in the middle. But that's the best I got. :foot:

Okay, Karl at fototime helped me out and we should be good to go now. :)

Here's the shots of the blade after the final etch, but before clean up.

Here's the angle iron suport I threw together for sanding integrals. Easy to clamp down and gives good blade support. :)

It's important to have supervision and quality control. ;) :D

This was prior to the very final finish stuff for the blade- I did the famous popsicle stick balance test. It's not famous? Oh, well maybe it should be. ;)

Finito- :)

Everything else is pretty much in my signature link. I tried to do a little video on the very final blade finish and pin peening, but those just did not come out at all.

Thanks for look'n guys. :)

Thanks guys :)

Sam- I LOVE the light. I threw together a little articulated arm to extend the reach--- you can kind'a see it in the photos. I aim the light where I want it, and it STAYS THERE. As much as I wish they didn't ruin $50 a pop, they are worth it. I have tossed at least a dozen of the cheapy gooseneck lamps over the last few years.

The cheap lights get hot after 10 minutes with anything over a 40watt bulb. I have this lamp on all day with a 100watt bulb and it simply doesn't get hot. It hardly even gets warm. It is really well built.

As I can afford it, I'm going to have one of these lamps on damn near everything in the shop. :)

Nick, i said it before and i will say it again, thank you for your contributions to the entire knifemaking community. Your wip's are amazing, fantastic work buddy :)

I bought that same lamp after your other post about it. It is the best shop light I have seen anywhere. The gooseneck actually stays right where you point it.

Thanks guys :)

Great knife Nick. Thanks for taking the time to post all the videos. The Tru-oil one is the first/only one I have seen.

What are the specs on the lamp, where can I get a hold of one?

Wow! You do great work brother (and make it look easy). Thanks for taking the time to post and help out us noobs. Cheers!

Beautifull knife Nick!!
Wonderfull write up in Knives Illustrated this month as well!
Greg

That ladder pattern is really nice and even. I'll bet it's pretty chatoyant in person. Sweet knife.

Thanks again guys :)

Carl- sorry, I missed your question! :o Ben was REALLY close (thanks Ben!). I almost ordered that one, but Brian Fellhoelter steered me toward this one. I like the mounting options you get with it better. It has a quick disconnect coupler, like on air tools, and it's really slick. You can mount studs for it in different places and move the entire light if you need to. :)

This is the type I have... :)

Quick update -

knife arrived today and it is, if possible, even better than I thought it would be :thumbup:

Once Coop comes back from Blade and rests up, I will send it to him and then post the pictures :D
