Damascus - is this normal?

The guts of this have been coverd pretty well already but the fix for it is not totally out of reach. The travel of the detent does go out side the handle on the Mnandi but only just. You could etch up to that point and have the masked area only just visible, or you could also stain the masked area to show the surface pattern with no texture. It would be a little extra work for CRK but the results would be better that what they have now.

I think the "ratcheting" that one could feel when opening and closing the knife was worse on some damascus patterns than others. I have raindrop Mnandis with the full etch and it has quite an obvious feel. I have to sympathise with CRK here though as they are never going to please everybody no matter what they do. I do agree that the larger masked area is not very CRK though and prefer the previous problem to that. :p

I think anyone paying the premium for a Damascus blade is in the game for looks first, smoothness second. If you can't have both, I'd choose the full etch on the blade. Its a special case in CRK where function should follow form. They could simply have a disclaimer that the knife might feel rough.

Is there anyone on this forum who despises their rough Damascus Mnandi?

My raindrop Sebenza was a bit rough when it was new. I polished the detent path with a cotton swab loaded with sharpening compound. It didn't take long to smooth out the opening action.

I have always liked the looks of the CRK Damascus blade and drool over the beautiful ones posted on here. Now if all of them had this very obvious masked area I wouldn't be interested in one.

Thanks for posting because I wasn't aware of this and if I should ever purchase one this is the first area I will check for the fit and finish I expect from CRK. I sure wouldn't be happy with the Mnandi in the op.

Exactly ... but I love the feel as well. I have a spiro Mnandi where I can feel every line of the pattern when I open / closet it and I love it. It is one of my favorites precisely because of this reason.

Anyway it is what it is.
