Damascus, just for looks or?

Yes. Alabama Damascus supplies all of the Damascus for kershaw.

Thats who I was going to order a custom dagger blade from.

So they do produce high quality Damascus? Is theirs the "real" kind, or the one made with chemicals etching into it?

Can their blades be used as EDC without worry of damaging the damascus?

I know they planned on laser cutting my blade out of the Damascus.

I was going to get their Buck shot, its pretty bad ass.

When you sharpen th edge, does the damascus start to wear away like a coating?

Yes, they make real layered steel. I've worked with their stuff once and it's pretty decent stuff.

As for the original question. Yes, damascus can be good. However that completely depends on the damascus AND the heat treat (this is true for any steel, and just as much for damascus steels.).

The original question is kind of the wrong one it's like asking if steel is good to make a knife from. Some steels yes, other steels no,and then it also depends on who does the making and what does he do with it.

As for me I've found damascus to be excellent for edc purposes. It usually has decent edge holding which is also do to the fact that the (I think) different components in the layers wear diwn at different speeds, leaving a toothy type edge that will cut well for longer than most monosteels.

As for bulat or wootz (REAL damascus) I've yet to try it but I will one day. From what I understand it tests very well.

Ok thats good to hear about Alabama. I assume they also have a very high quality heat treat?

Can anyone atest to that?

And what is the difference between this bulat & wootz compared to Alabama? (If you say Alabama does the real layered steel Damascus)

It's all to do with the manufacturing process. Just google bulat steel for a little and you'll learn a lot.

Regular damascus (such as alabama damascus makes) is layers welded together un pressure and heat. Bulat or Wootz is a different animal alltogether. I believe it's smelted somehow but don't know the specifics.

i think damask or damascus oringinally refers to blades made by syrian bladesmith, which is made of wootz steel that has particular pattern on the surface. later on damascus also refers to pattern welded steel. Most of the damascus on the market we seen today are made by forge weld different type of steel or alloy together to reveal different pattern.
