I for one would love to see one. I am building a new gas forge and plan on making at least one out of 1075 and 15n20 22" oal and Ironwood handle, silver bolster and pommel. H.I. has inspired me.:D

It seems to me that damascus is a bit brittle for a user, at least on wood. It would be a tragedy to shatter a bit of one.

Good on ye' Original...
I too have been inspired to get my shop in order and in one place...too much flex-shaft sanding in the living room, run outside to use the big grinder(in the snow) and epoxy'ing in the basement...I look forward to seeing your damascus khuk, that'd be a gem.

As an art piece - that would be way cool. As a user? I don't know. I'm no metals expert, but it seems to me it would be a heck of a lot of effort to make a blade that (to me) would seem too brittle to use it heavily.

That said, I'd love to see it.

thx - cpr

Check out Valiantco.com and click on the "World" page. Note that Indonesian pamor is different from the Damascus we're used to in the west, but it is tough and beautiful.

Got a bit of lamination in this old one. Kind of "hairpin" lamination like seen in some Tibetan pieces. Not really vivid, but it's there.

I believe gent's that with proper heat treat and tempering, also going for the distinct Hamon, that I will be able to make a good user. with the 20ton press making billets is much faster and easier. Looking for a tough, pretty blade with balance. I would not waste my time on wall hangers, they have to be usable.
Thanks Ferguson for the pics,I see them and all for the encouragment.

Heres another Tibetan Hairpin style folded one. I think the handle is an replacment but still authentic Nepali village post world war 2 repair of a pre WW2 blade.

Good damascus works fine on wood, modern mass produced Indian Birds eye damascus doesnt.

Some fine old kukris have much finer damascus work, nearer to Japanese hada.

Valiant makes one. I think our long lost pal High Desert Walker who sells/sold Valiant attempted to get one several times and so far as I know never got them to send him one. You might want to check ebay and see if his store is still up. I think it was called Valiant USA.

It's marked sold out on their website http://www.valiantco.com/world1.html

(PS Mods if putting this link in is a no no feel free to delete)

Thanks Spiral, thought if there were any, you would have one or more. That blade looks like it might have been sharpened away a bit or maybe folded in re-forging??

Sure Ive Got 4 or 5 but the pics for this one were handy.

I am sure its been sharpend in its life but judging the pattern on both sides of blade & general shape dont think its lost much ,about 3 millimetres maybe? the central pattern remains cental within the blade after all, it hasnt been reforged, that leaves certan trademarks in the blade that this one doesnt have. {ive got reforged blades as well.]. It still cuts well .

The pattern is a deliberate Tibetan style hairpin forge. Thats what its meant to look like! ;)

It only came out of Nepal last year, its done it working duty, ive put int into retirment to enjoy its old age now. :D

Its rough & primitive but i like it!

Heres a high quality modern Damascus kukri in the making owned by Dr. Dan,

The blade was made and forged to shape by Delbert Ealy, and then Dan Koster did some work on it as well I believe, its currently bieng further worked on & finnished off by Swiss knifemaker apparently.

I certanly look forward to seeing the end result!

That is and will be one amazing looking damascus kukri, Sprial! The end result will undoubtedly be a stunning piece.
Cheers

Those are what I am talking about, dang, Delbert Ealy beat me to it, and almost exactly what I will make, I do have some awsome Iron wood.
Thanks again Spiral, DUI Drooler for sure.

Original If you forge your own damascus & work it to that at least that degree please show examples either here or emailed to spiraltwista@aol.com [with kukri in title.;)]

I also wonder if you can see the refinment visable in shape & fullers of the the older piece? {of Course Dans is unfinished so will evolve further.}

I have some kukris of such impecable style that they cry out to be copied if you can truly do it. {No offence intended , I just dont know you yet.]

Past work shows where your at....

No offence taken, I am currently working towards an "Original" pattern of damascus, Western star...
I am a Master jeweler and master craftsman/ fabricator of metals. I will be glad to show my work to you and post it here.

Those are some spectacular blades Spiral and Steve, THANKS for taking the time to post the pics, I could spend years researching and not find the wonderful treasures shown here.
