Finally have all the tools together, more or less, and it's time to order raw materials for damascus.

Kelly Cupples 1080 and 15N20 is what I'm going to use.

Any suggestions on stock width and thickness? I'll be drawing things out with a treadle hammer, not a powered tool.

I'm thinking eiher 1/8 x 1 or 1.25 for the 1080, any reason to prefer one over the other?
Don't know what thickness is better on the 15n20. He has .065, .072, and .095.

I use 1/4-1/2" thick x 1-1/2" wide stock, but I have power hammers.

For hand or treadle hammer, I would use 1/8"-3/16" thick x 1" wide stock.

I'm working on my first billet now, and used 0.6" 15n20, and 1/8" 1095. At the hammer in I went to, the guys doing the damascus demonstration used a ratio of 2:1 in steel thickness. The end result tooted really good.

I use 1/8 x 1 or 1084 and .065 15n20. I cut my 2" bars in half to a 6" length, then stacked to 1/2" thick, thats using hand hammers. Using a treadle I would probably use the same but would make the billet 3/4 to 1" thick.

Sounds like 1x 1/8 and the thinner 15n20 is the way to go to make some tootin' damascus. Thanks for the input!
