Recommendation? Damascus one-Bay: Any good?

Damascus knives are something you should buy only from recognized established makers and companies.
Actually the same holds true for knives in general, but for damascus even moreso.

Ebay is a very broad marketplace with both good and bad sellers .

But good quality , functional Damascus is usually not cheap .

Buyer beware !

My takeaway from this thread so far is that there might be an opportunity for a quality blade operation if given the right materials and QC/QA oversight followed by effective branding and marketing.

One of the major knife makers could bring out a line of pattern welded blades for instance.

Maybe Pakistan isn't the country though. Perhaps Turkey is.

I can't follow up on this idea myself for a host of reasons. Anybody out there who could?

No.

Ebay damascus crap exists to fulfill the wants of the ignorant (or those that know it is crap and want to hang it on the wall). True quality damascus is expensive and labor intensive. If there was an opportunity to do it cheaply AND with good quality, it would have been seized by now.

No effective branding or marketing will compete with the monopoly that Pakistan has on this crap. You are forgetting that true knife enthusiasts account for a VERY small percentage of total knife sales. It is not worth it to try to compete with Pakistan at a price point that gives value AND good quality. If you want crap, you go to Pakistan. If you want quality, you go domestic for damascus.

I cannot see this changing. Ever. Quality damascus is expensive, and there is no way around it.
