I have for awhile now wanted to put togather a site that documents the diffrent types of pattern welded steel. kinda a how to site on diffrent patterns. I have searched the web and nothing much could be found. the onley real good sorce i have found so far is the book called "The pattern welded blade". so what do you think?

JT I for one would love to see that site come together, I have done searches myself and have found a lot of info but it dosent seem to be consolidated in one place. I have read everything i can get my hands on, and got Ed Caffery's basic video. (I HIGHLY recommend Ed's vid for anyone wanting to make pattern welded steel) And when I feel comfortable Im going to order his advanced video. Maybe someday Ill have the funds to take one of his classes.
If I can do anything to help (i.e. research etc.) let me know.

I have been thinking of actualy showing how to do the patterns using a 3D modeling program like 3D studio Max. that way i can easley stack and twist billits and show the pattern. I will take any research help i can get :D.

I've actually been quietly working on a site that tells everything I know about pattern welding. Parts of that will be pattern "recipes" and patterning theory. It's not quite ready yet, but I'm working on it. The "recipes" section is particularly deficient at the moment, but that will be changing. I think you'll find that modeling some of this stuff in 3d will be tough (especially patterns that are twist based). It's possible I suppose to capture some of the nuances of the steel's movement with NURBS modeling, but it would probably be a PITA. That said I'm working on teaching myself Rhino right now ;)

As a matter of fact, once I go run the dogs around in the yard a bit I'll do some work tonight on the patterning section. I had a rare chance to get some shop time in today so I prioritized that above the site, but I have to have it to at least presentable before a hammer-in I'm demonstrating at in a couple of weeks.

Some of the things planned to go on the site are:

  • "Basic" patterns such as twist, ladder, random, etc
  • Modifications on the basic patterns (maiden's hair, raindrop, etc)
  • W's based patterns
  • Composite bar patterns (gordian knot, etc)
  • Mosaic patterns (this list gets huge)
  • Theory behind why the patterns happen

I'm up for other suggestions of things that folks would like to see as well. What's there right now is at Deker's Patternwelding Info. I hadn't planned to release it yet, but I'd rather have folks get some use out of it while it's growing than wait for it to be perfect :)

JT,
Well it looks like you may have your wish in a little bit, without any work on your part.
Rob,
You know I have been thinking about this for awhile too, although in book form rather than online. Call me when you get a chance, I have some ideas for you.

Deker,

I keep checking out your site to see if you've added more info. Not to put any pressure on you, but just when the heck are you going to do that?

Inquiring minds want to know.

All the best, Phil

:o Missed this first time around! Added to my favorites!

Thanks,Phil,for bringing this up.

Thankls,D&D,for sharing!!!

I'll admit I've fallen a bit behind on this project. It's been a bit crazy around here getting the press in and running, etc. I'll be back on it in a month or so once I get some stuff around here settled.
