Damascus Patterns

devin thomas makes some pretty damn sweet stuff there is a reason though

he makes so much damascus it makes ones head spin and he does extensive amounts of stainless damascus work.

This thread is fantastic.

Feather pattern does it for me. Totally stunning.

Explosion and basket weave are right up there.

Earlier, I saw Devin's post of that new stainless feather damascus of his. The blade almost a foot long, persian style - a cimeter for cutting meat. A real beauty, but that stainless feather damascus was the most amazing stuff, just had to get one. I'll be drooling for several months, thinking about it, 'til it arrives.

There is some good looking steel on these pages. Earlier in the thread someone mentioned twisted patterns, being their favourite.

Here are a few photos of some of my work, all done in various styles of twisting.

I made some steel for a friend of mine. It was a 7 bar twist with about 10 layers in each bar. He sent this over to George Dailey to have a folder made.

I have been messing about with inlaying twisted rods into bars of steel lately. An experiment with ideas on how it was done in Anglo Saxon and Viking times.

A piece of barrel welding. This is only a short piece, about 4" long. The single bar of twisted steel turns about 12 times in the length.

A ring done in the same way as the barrel welding

And something a bit different. I think all my years of messing about with pattern welding and understanding how to control patterns with manipulation and careful forging has resulted in being able to do this. This photo shows half a bar and is only about 2.5" long by 1/2" wide. There is another 14" of it somewhere in my workshop.
This has been made out of flat sheets of steel. The only powder used was the borax.

VERY nice work Mick. That George Dailey knife is NICE and the barrel welding is really cool as well. That ring is also VERY nice.

Thanks for showing your work.

Nice work Mick! I liked the Damascus ring very much...

I think that this is a good place to post some of the amazing Damascus
art of 7-10 years ago, many of which are documented in my first book
"... Modern Custom Folding Knives".

Here is the wondrous Mosaic Damascus and folding knife art of Shane Taylor...

All the best,

Here is something extraordinary from the Master, Steve Schwarzer.... Mosaic Damascus and folder making at their best!
