Damascus performance

Question. Damascus looks cute.



But beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Can it perform? Or is it used as decorated / precious metal only? How Damascus steel compares to ATS-34, D2 or say S30V? Specifically after loss of the technique and modern reproduction attempts.

I am very interested to hear about this in more detail as well. I have read many things about Damascus. I wonder how much was fact, and how much wasn't exact fact.

I agree.... Material, experience of the makers etc. Kevin Cashen's O-1/L-6 is as good as any mono steel made...

I think that's a beauty and the function is in it's beauty. The mosaic damascus blade is very bendable and has been heat coloured which will remove some of the hardening that went into the blade. I most often use mosaic Damascus in my blades and bolsters so I'm not calling down this folder, I'm just stating what I know to be true about the blade. Kevin Cashen told me that a few years back before cutting comps went pro, Jerry Fisk asked him to make a damascus knife for a hammer in cutting comp just to prove that a properly done one could at least be competitive. Well, Kevin did it and won the competition.
