What is a good combination(s) of steels for carbon Damascus billets? I have the " high contrast" from Texas knife, what next?

Can anyone explain the chief differences in making stainless Damascus, or point me to a previous thread or good web page?

I have made many simple welds in the forge. I want my billet to turn out right by using the right materials.

It is really hard to beat 1084 and 15N20. After you get that down to a science, try all the manipulations of pattern - twist, ladder, turkish, etc.

The most common, easiest mix is 1084 and 15n20. You already have the 15n20, now get some 1084 or second choice is 1095.

Stainless Damascus is lots harder, master carbon Damascus first. Crawl, walk, run. Stainless Damascus is like pole vaulting:) it's good to push your self, but easy does it there cowboy.

I wasn't planning on keeping up with Chad Nichols and Devin Thomas right when I start out, ha. I just would like some reading material on stainless Damascus if anyone knows of a good source. Inquisitive minds want to know, that's all. Reading the patent on timascus was very interesting.

Stainless damascus is the realm of big equipment and lots of experience. The process is much more complex than can be explained in a post. There are some good books and DVDs that explain it along with many more basic damascus processes. That might be the best path to take for info.
