I have a friend that just told me they could get me some Damascus scraps from his father-in law. I know that not many of them are gonna be big enough to use as is on a tomahawk or knife with decent length. So my question is, is it possible to take two pieces and forge weld them together and be good as one piece in the end. I don't know much about Damascus so I am lost on this I believe he said it was made of 5160 and 15n20. I am new to this, just getting my equipment together and still have a lot to learn so be kind please and thank you!!

Damascus is a fairly expensive to very expensive material. For many pieces say 1" X1" are not giveaways but you could use your own . Frank

there are some pieces that are about 3" inches long and about 1/2" thick and 1" wide *** and then there are quite a few pieces that are 2 inches long 1 inch thick and 1 1/2 inches wide *****. Like I said a friend of mine has had them for awhile he got them for his father inlaw and he never got into the work so he has offered to pass them on to me if I could use them. I basically just wanted to make sure I could forge two pieces together.

Those pieces would make really good guards, or you could heat them up and draw them out to blade size, I'm not sure what that would do to the pattern though

Some of those pieces sound like they are large enough to forge small knives from. Also you can make what Ed Caffrey calls fossil damascus. Make a steel box out of a 3x3x6" piece of square tube with one end sealed. Put all the pieces into the can. Pour in powdered steel tamp and fill until you can't get any more in the box. Weld a top on the box then forge weld it all together. It is some work and a press or power hammer would be nice but it can be done. Welding up two pieces of damascus without really looking at pattern might come out looking rather, well shall we say interesting.
