Damascus Sharpness- Unreasonable Expectations?

I've recently been told that Devin Thomas non-stainless steel is not as good a working steel as BG42, and I should not expect the blade to be as sharp. What do you guys think? It's very beautiful, but it's a little depressing to think that I'll never get a perfect edge on it.
