Damascus steel layers separating?

This morning I accidentally dropped a small (OAL 6") custom Damascus steel knife on the tip onto a ceramic floor. I expected the tip to be damaged. What I didn't expect was the blade to split in half nearly 1/4" backwards from the tip. I can slide a piece of paper into the blade along the thin axis.

The knife is ruined, but I thought Damascus layers were welded together and were in essence a single piece of steel? Is this something normal for Damascus? Because that certain limits its utility as a "working blade" steel.

I've had Brad Vice Alabama Damascus delaminate while grindind before hardened. It can happen.

Wow , that's too bad.

Any pics?

Now I'll have to be careful with my Manix2 S90V/CPM154 composite blade.

It just sucks to have it happen to a $250 custom knife I've owned for less than a year.
Who made the knife? Where's it from? A "$250 custom knife" could be anything- it could be a bargain custom or an over priced pakistani import.

If it was made by a reputable maker they'll fix it, if it was made by a reputable manufacturer they'll replace it. If it's a pakistani import then you're on your own.

It was made by a member here, Alan Davis, to my design.

It certainly can't hurt to contact him. If nothing else, if the steel is defective he can avoid using more of that batch.

I had an issue with a bad batch of A2 from NJSB. My testing and shattered hopes led to NJSB pulling all of that "lot" of A2.

Does anyone have Alan Davis' contact information? His website is on Facebook and I don't do Facebook.

Just PM him here or his website has contact info. Can't remember which I used to talk about a blade, but I was able to get through with one of them.

Hope everything works out!

Alan responded to my email about this issue within 20 minutes, and offered to make me a new blade if it is indeed split as I described. So I'll send it off to him this week.

So nice to work with a true professional. He's made me two knives, and has been a pleasure to work with from the beginning.
