Damascus steel

Personally I love raindrop damascus by Devin Thomas.

depends on what you mean by "damascus". Wootz steel, as made at the time of the crusades had a random pattern, I believe. Modern "damascus" is actually layers of steel of different compositions welded together. And it is done to give a specific pattern.

Normally the knife maker buys the steel already pattern welded from someone who specializes in it. Devon Thomas is famous for the beautiful job he does in pattern welding.
