Well, I enjoy these threads when other people do them, and I am having a good time putting some together myself.

This thread is about a camp knife for Danbo. It's similar to one I made him before. He actually ordered them both at the same time. Many of these images are from awhile back.

Thanks for looking! :D

Here's a shot of forging the blade to shape-

Getting closer-

A shot of it in the forge, reheating-

This is the blade all forged to shape, i.e. bevels are in, distal taper, tang shape, and clip forged in as well-

All cleaned up and ready for heat-treat-

Heat-treated, and very slightly convex ground to 320X-

Hand-sanded to 600X, guard is fit, spacers have been surface ground down to 1/16" thick and fit, and blackwood is ready to fit-

Similar blade shape to the first Danbo camp knife, I see. Sort of Fikes-ish and very cool. As if that big lug didn't have enough to grin about after Blade. :p

Nick,
Now that's the way to do things, clean, simple, and bad to the bone!
Love the knife, Danbo is a lucky man for sure.

Thanks fellas!

Danbo does not deserve this knife... but even a dumb blind pig gets an acorn every now and again :p Just kidding :D

I'll get it finished up and a shot of it soon.

I love these threads--thanks for the pictures.
The knife looks beautiful.
Danbo does not.
:D

Thanks for the great shots. If this is anything like the other camp knife, then it will be a very drool-worthy knife. I see little hamon tease there -- can't wait for some more pics.

Another great knife and great thread. Thanks for posting the pics, I'm looking forward to the finished product.

Are you left handed Nick? You've got the hammer in the wrong hand and the anvil backwards :).

Matt-

Everyone ELSE is backwards!!!

J/K :) Yep, been left handed all 27 years... except for the 3 times I've broken my left arm/hand. Being a small-town kid it's pretty easy to find ways to break limbs ;)

My dad is about as left-handed as possible, and I WAS that way. Knifemaking sure has forced me to use that damn right hand :)

Burch... this blade has the weirdest hamon ever. It wasn't clay coated, it was just time/temp/quenchant. It's like tiger-stripes at a 45 degree angle.

I told Dan I'd polish it out for another big wad of $$$, but he wants to use this one- so it's staying at a simple and clean 600X.

Thanks folks :D

Danbo hasn't posted yet, he must not want it, you should send it to me! :D

Thanks for the in process pics, that is neat. Looks pretty good so far.

You made another one for that cheezdik Danbo.
Bad puppy Nick.
Missed the paper again.

Cheezdik? I got your cheezdik; right here! :D

I haven't posted about this knife yet, because I'm waiting for the finished pics. So far, I'm REALLY liking it though! :)

Yeah, or a cheezdic one in a while..... :D

Great lookin' work and you were right the first time, Nick........he does not deserve it. ;)

Huh Hum....

Back from the dead  :)

Okay, that last pic was everything ready for glue up (well, the blade needed more finishing, but other than that).

Starting to shape the handle on my 2" wheel (36grit belt)

Starting to file the radius into the finger guard

Closer view of the same task, a little bit more filed in at this point.

Doing some smoothing with a slack belt. I don't do much with a slack belt, it will wash out the wood and leave the metal parts high. I just do a minimal amount to help blend the contours.

Hand sanding the handle-

Very lightly buffing the blackwood, not the guard-

danbo83ea.jpg

At this point, the guard has a sharp edge on it. Not a good thing, so I made this little sanding block to sand this edge and "soften" it.

Starting to resharpen it on a fine India stone-

Great looking knife, Nick. It's good to see that you are getting all this practice on Danbo's knives so that you will have things down pat when you make mine. :D

Thanks guys :)

Keith, Dan's name isn't in the book for any more knives... so no worries about him holding up your knife :D
