I've been pounding on this beefy ball pein hammer with hopes of making something that resembles a hawk.

Wow...it's tough moving that thick metal around. I almost tore my shirt sleeve from the swollen muscles! :)

Anyone in Boise ID that might let me in their shop for a bit for some power hammer help?

i was wondering about how hard making a hawk would be. glad you posted this.... i think i will wait!

thanks

Man,I feel your pain. Every once in a while I get the notion to hammer out a ball peen without the power hammer just to see if I still can. It sure is tough!!!! Just keep hammering and it will come.

I use a short handled 8# hammer and give it a few flattenin whacks first. then I work the 3# cross pien. seems to go faster that way!

I have been using a forging press for over 10 years for making damascus, but i still forge out all blades by hand. The steel will move if its at the proper temp range and if the hammer is sized to you, don't try to use too big of a hammer. Don't go bigger than a 3 lb hammer unless you do a lot of forging. Also if you have time to spare that you can't forge; do some curls focused on your forearms, that is the main area that you will be using (it was for me anyway). Forging a 2 lb ball peen into a hawk shouldn't take you more than 30 min, maybe twice that for your first one.
Thanks,
Del

Wow Del, Your alot faster than I am. I been forging since 1989 and have forge a couple hundred hawks out of ball peens. I can't even do them in 30 mins with a power hammer and keep everything in line.
