The dumb thing is the SHARPEST dern PRACTICAL cutter in the house. Like a laser cutter and.... d e l i c a t e.....slitting. Ooooh, convex edge precision.

but..

CHEAP! Not PRETTY! MUNDANE! WOODY! p-r-i-m-i-t-i-v-e!

How can a card carrying Knife Knut have something like THAT in his pocket when he wishes to perform cutlery chores?

:jerkit:

Function over form. That makes it a favorite. Opinels are only appreciated by those "in the know" :p

Aw quit postin that hippie ZEN crap. Ya can't have a OPINEL at the KNIFE show. Get laffed outta the room.

:D

If anyone laughs you out of the room for having an Opinel, they've laughed one of the better-cutting knives and its owner out of the room. Their loss.

Want more grief? Make an even uglier knife from an M2 hacksaw blade. Makes the Opinel seem like a war club.

Theoretically I like opinels, but when the handle/blade goes from too loose to too tight and back due to humidty changes, it becomes a PIA.

This reminds me about Opinels again and wonder why I don't go and get one or two. I still have an article from a knife mag showing various types in various woods. Someday, someday.

You answered your own question.

That's why a true knife knut would use an Opinel. It works.

It's a worker, not a fantasy knife. One deserves much more respect for using an Opinel than some flashy wannabe knife. An Opinel is the perfect knife for a real card-carrying knife knut. Someone that needs a knife to peform (rather than being a piece of wannabe jewlery) would use an Opinel over some trendy tanto-point knife ;)

There are a lot of flashy knives that also perform, but they are more expensive and don't perform any better than an Opinel for precise cutting. They can usually do other things better, but some people believe in carrying only what you need. The Opinel is very minimalist, and that is a very good thing.

If you sand them down and give them a good deep linseed oil finish you won't have that problem. Plus you can cutomize the handle to your own shape. Mine have been subjected to watery environments with no problems.

You'll have a good looking knife that will out cut many of your overpriced Soldier Of Fortune fantacy clunkers.

Mall Ninjas beware. All Opinel fans are out to get ya :D If we lose our trusty weapon in the heat of battle, we won't have to take a small loan out to replace it!!! Now I have to run and put an edge on my BM Apparition ;)

Opinel, the anti-serum for Tactical Fever.

Hey Lavan, don't know why you think they aren't pretty. They're beautiful!

And there are multiple solutions if the aesthetics aren't to your taste: They are available in several different woods. They can be bought with designs etched into the wood. You can alter the handle shape any way you want. You can stain/dye/burn the wood.

Best Wishes,
-Bob

I think that little bulge in Lavan's cheek is his tongue. ;) ;) ;) But it's nice to see so many Opinellisti jump to the defense! (Yes, of course I have one. :) )

As you can plainly see, I whacked the blade off and not content with that, I even dug into the handle with a ...GOOD .... knife to wreck it even more.

:D :D :D

Okay, the boat ain't no Michelangelo but it serves the purpose of ruining the cheap junk of a knife. I hate Opinels!!!!!!! Grrrrrrr....

I'm sorry, Lavan! I didn't mean to do it! It just slipped out! ;) ;) ;) And that's a pretty cr4ppy carving on that handle. Better send it to me for proper disposal! :D

i had one years ago and lost it. today while buying stocking stuffers i saw the #7 and picked it up. for me. fun knife, forgot how much i like them for the simple stuff around the house.

and BTW...
