Thanks for the response, Kevin. There has been some discussion on other forums about quenching at ~ 400F and holding for hours, which I perhaps misnamed isothermal quenching. It's in one metallurgy primer I read, too, but not discussed at length.

You did not misname, both martempering and austempering are isothermal quenches. 400F would be within the martensite range for many alloys. 450F would be a safer bet to hold for many hours to get pure lower bainite.

Would the salts you suggest I could use be very expensive? Is the reason you prefer gas because of being able reach austenitizing rapidly after pre-heat??

Thanks again. RL

I am not sure what the price would be on such salts, nor am I knowledgable as to a source for them. The reason I now insist on using gas for high temp, is all the experinece I have with why it can be a bad idea to surround a 1500F tube of highly conductive salts, hell bent on leaking, with 220V electrical elements. If you don't get tired of that nice tingly feeling while heat treating, you will get tired of replacing elements at $25 a shot and kiln sections at $200 a shot.:( I had miserable luck and struggled with this for a couple of years before I looked at gas. Gas doesn't care of the salt leaks (though it still needs to be fixed) and still works after the refracory gets infiltrated with salts.

Oh yes, and it does also heat up in 1/2 to 1/4 of the time ;)

Kevin, yes I understand that danger. I would think gas would recover quickly by comparison and provide more rapid ramping from pre-heat.

I have looked at the Even Heat verticals on the net and have been thinking of calling Tim Zowada with some questions. I would love to have two, one for austenitizing and one for salt quench. Wow!! That is what I need to work toward. I would turn down 10 Miss Americas for that.

Thanks for the responce.

EDIT: no I wouldn't; maybe 1 Miss America.

Man, I don't know.... you've got the knife bug really bad. Vanessa Williams was a Miss America for awhile, wasn't she??? :D
