Danny are you REALLY trying to become a ninja, or just ninja martial arts?

Hello, Danny,
I'd really love to know more about what you're doing in Japan,
but first off, today I was thinking to myself, Are you learning how to disguise yourself, climbing techniques, etc., etc, that are non martial assasin techniques that I have been lead to believe are critical to becoming successful ninja assasin,
Of course, I have no real belief that you would ever want to assasinate someone, but those are the roots of ninjitsu, right? or have I been mislead?
thanks for your valuable time.

He'd tell you....but he'd have to kill you.

or at least totally flip out;)

Jake

That is a fair question, Walking Man.
You are right , though, some of the common assumptions are incorrect, so there may be some surprises waiting for you.
Our primary focus of learning is hand to hand combat with a higher level of understanding, almost at a spiritual level.
When we move, we try never to use more than 1 ounce of strength.
The use of power, muscular power, is a weakness.

When I say combat, that is serious stuff. Please dont try to compare it to any of the "sport" martial arts. What we do is pretty serious and is not for kids. It is pretty "final," if you know what I mean. What you do with the knowledge is up to you, so we try not to teach bad people.

Disguises and climbing techniques ?
Yes. Maybe a little class once in a while. Those are relatively simple matters compared to the combat method. They are mostly common sense and you could probably guess what we do or learn it from other sources in the west.
No big deal there. Some of our old school info is basically pointless to learn in light of technological advances in the west. Motion sensors, heartbeat detectors, heat sensors, pharmaceuticals, night vision goggles, all that kind of killed the advantages that some of our older skills provided in the modern battlefield. If you are in a place that doesnt have that stuff, then it can be very useful.

The roots of ninjutsu are older and deeper than most people suspect. They go all the way back to India almost 3,000 years ago.

The myths of ninjitsu are both untrue and understated. Do we disappear in a cloud of smoke ?
Maybe.
More likely we would move in such a way that you couldnt see anything because your own arm was blocking your vision and at that moment your own knife goes into your back.

I know that sounds awful, but this is a self-defense situation I am describing.

Survivng difficult situations is our purpose. Thats about the best way I can describe it. If that means wear a disguise or climb a tree or something more unpleasant, then so be it.

that might be correct. no joke.
( the high school teacher thing)

cult of kali ? i have no idea what you are talking about.

Sometimes it even means looking like a slightly overweight, big footed, slow moving and awkward westerner...

I bet *that* comes as a surprise to some of your Japanese sparring partners when they first meet you!

I have no idea where I am pulling this knowledge from, probably some old movie, but I think the Cult of Kali was a group of assassins in India also called the Thugees. The word "Thug" was derived from Thugee.

indiana jones and the temple of doom!!

i used to scare my sister with "KALIMA! KALIMA... SHOOP DEE DAY"

and than do the heart thing. :D

Sounds a whole lot like somthing out of an Indiana Jones Movie!!

the cult being refers to is translated "hash drinkers " in Hindu it would be hashian(sp) or to westerners assassin and they have as much to do with ninja as cave men do to the apache evolution has gone on since them

OT danny we had a drunken MA workshop over here last night , you would have loved it

99% of the Bujinkan students, in Japan and in other countries, are not Japanese.
Really, that hasn't been an issue IN the dojo.
It's your average Japanese guy who doesnt study martial arts who makes that kind of assumption.
As long as Hatsumi Sensei knows how I am doing, that's all that matters to me.
This is a fascinating art and is always fresh and new and challenging and interesting. I don't know anything else like it that can satisfy a person in so many ways for his or her whole life.
IF you ever get the chance, try it.

Demon Tessu yeah, I was thinking that too - the good ol' Hashishians. They get high on weed and turn into bloodthirsty murderers. If that doesn't sound dubious I don't know what does!
