Dark Ops (folders with weight)

What do you guys think of the Dark Ops folder? I am looking for a folder with some good weight to it. The Cold Steel AK-47's have a good feel to them (I have the G10), the Ka Bar mule knives do too but not a very attractive knife nor does it seem to be a very well-balanced knife. Any suggestions?

other than the questionable advertising and the fact the designs were stolen from extreme ratio the one i have seen wasnt too bad, i would prefer the ER version myself, but if ya can get a deal on one it might not be too bad.

Dark Ops are great when you're M16 runs out of ammo and you're M9 jams and your surrounded by terrorists in the heart of a middle-eastern desert...

Otherwise, get something else.

I disagree, unless they've improved their lock quality I wouldn't get a Dark Ops folder for any reason. In the "surrounded by terrorists" situation I would recommend a folder with the Benchmade Axis lock or Spyderco Compression lock.
Though, really, a good multi-tool will help fix your truck, and un-jam your M9 so you can get back to actual fighting, not just running around like cannon fodder.
You should have a good bayonet on that M-16 anyway, making the idea of fighting with a folding knife pretty silly.

For a big heavy folder, I would get something from the Kershaw ZT lineup, or a Benchmade 610.
You could also check out the Ontario Hossom Retribution folder.

Agree with checking out the ZT line. Great quality, no nonsense, knives that will get the job done. I will admit to liking the DO Stratofighter Stilleto design. A lot like the ER Nemisis, but with some changes.

If the douk-douk has been in production since 1927, then the patents have long since expired.

The patents have expired, the design is still there and Cold Steel found its ..., say,... inspiration at Douk-Douk.

dantzk.

My Lord...

FireStrings85, you managed to mention two of the most controversial knife brands in the industry in the same thread!

Take a look around on the forums, you'll find that DarkOps is more oft referred to as "DorkOps" in the common parlance around here. While their designs have some creedence---because they stole them from the knowledgeable folks at Extrema Ratio ;)---they are wickedly overpriced and the quality is hit-or-miss.

In reference to Cold Steel, while their knives are out-sourced and their designs are "close copies" of the blueprints from those of other knifemakers, some of their products are outstand...others are shoddy.

If you're looking for something with a little bit of heft, I'd recommend the Spyderco Chinook III. It cuts fiercedly with a flat-ground CPM S30V stainless blade, grippy G10 handle scales, and a rock-solid backlock. Also, I would recommend the Benchmade Skirmish or Ontario Hossom Retribution I. Any of these examples would provide you with more than enough of that certain "heft" you're looking for in my opinion.

God bless.

KATN,

Wade

I would shy away from Cold Steal and Dork Ops and just buy a Zero Tolerance. Or heck, a Strider. The ZT's don't have blood grooves, though, unfortunately ;)

coating to shed fine airborne sand, bloodgrooves to direct the flow of body fluids, replacable quartz inserts, you can't go worng with a Dark Ops folder.

For a fixed blade I advise you to look at the Razr.

;)

The Spyderco Manix is a good beefy folder if you can find someone who still has them in stock. They were discontinued......this year? I think? Might have been last year. At any rate, they're amazing and reliable with the ergonomics spydies are known for. Very solid, nice and heavy, too.
