Dark red bone or chestnut bone peanut? Help!

All the talk on the peanut thread has got me wanting a peanut to carry on a daily basis. I have Kinsey's knife, but after about losing it three or four times, I stopped carrying it. I'd love to see your pictures of both examples; maybe it'd help me make up my mind. I love the old red bone, but the examples I've seen of the new bone aren't quite the Dane color. Help me decide?

I'm partial to chestnut bone, but like people say, get both!

Yeah, I almost put in the first post, "no one say buy both." If I'm going to spend $90 on knives, I'll buy a GEC and be done with it.

I'm leaning a bit towards chestnut bone, if only because the red bone would never be "quite dark enough," which would always make me wish for an old red bone. Lol

If the Dark Red Bone were actually dark red and dyed well, I'd get that.... Chestnut is usually much better done. It's kinda funny because the dark red bone in the pocket worn series is much better than the CV versions.

I don't have one, but if I were to get one, I would get a smooth chestnut bone CV. They look great in my opinion.

I greatly prefer the chestnut bone. Have a look at my peanut and see if you don't agree it's gorgeous.

Go to various dealers sites and manufactures sited that have sell peanuts to see all the variations available and then go to the search function here in the Traditional forum, put the word peanut in the box and look through all the threads that will come up about and with pictures of peanuts. You should be able to find all the answers to your questions in this thread.

My personal preference would be to go with a red bone as dark as possible or a nice amber bone.

I think their chestnut bone is much more consistently well dyed. I got a redbone that was down right pink out of the box. It was perfect in every other way. I gave it a simmer in some very dark Assam tea and it wound up coming out like their old redbone so I'm happy in the end but if you want something nice from the factory the chestnut is the way to go.

I preferred the chestnut. But, everybody's different. That's why they make an assortment of handles.

What?!?!?! No pictures?!?!?! You guys aren't being very helpful :D

You need a Yellow Composite and a Chestnut Bone. When I think of Peanuts, these are what I think of...and then you'll want to pick up some more Peanuts here and there because you can never have too many. If you're only getting one...get the Chestnut.

Current CASE Redbone seems to be various shades of scarlet to pink, notably in cv. Sort of melted Strawberry ice with white bits often on view. :barf: It's not like the Old School nor is it like equivalents from GEC or Böker. It's bright....

You can give it a strong tea bath, that'll improve it somewhat and darken the blades (works particularly well on stag - you need some nerve for this and on their Amber Bone)

In other words, Chestnut no doubt about it.

Thanks, Will

Hmmm yeah that's a hard question.
I have purchased 3 Case chestnut bones -SBJ, Sowbelly and SoddyJr-the last two were gifts so I haven't got them to show.
This pic pretty much says it all- Dark red is good but not all that dark . Chestnut is better.

I bought a pocket worn red bone peanut for a friend because red is her favorite color. I wasn't completely pleased with the dye job on the bone. She still carries it every day and it's been a couple of years, so it's doing it's job. I just wish it would have been a deeper red.

I have several (three I think) Case knives in their "Dark" Red Bone CV. Of the three, only one of them was acceptably dark red to me. The others not terrible, but not what I think of when I think of the word "Dark". The only reason I got them is that the pattern I wanted wasn't available in the other CV choices.

Unless you are tired of Case's Chestnut, I would opt for the Chestnut Bone CV every time over the Dark Red Bone CV. At its worst, it looks good. At its best, it is beautiful. I will also take Yellow CV and Amber Bone CV over the Dark Red..

The Pocket Worn Old Red is another matter. I rather like that one (only have two from that family - neither are Peanuts), but that puts you into stainless steel. I like their stainless just fine, but if you are looking for CV then your choices are more limited.

Brian, lets put this way; it's a peanut. Peanuts are not expensive, and they are much more durable than say booze or drugs. So buy one now and the other next month. Not talking a lot of money here, and peanuts like company. But you have to plan on having more than one.

So get both.

Definitely go with Chestnut. I recently bought a "dark red" Case Peanut in CV and the dye job sucks. It's like a pinkish candy cane or something. Luckily my little 4 yr old daughter likes it so I told her it's "her" knife and when she's a little older and more experienced she can have it. So far that knife is the first time I've ever been let down by Case and I might have sent it directly back to Case with a scalding letter if my little girl didn't take to it. I chose to give Case the benefit of the doubt though and I have a Peanut with Red Stag handle and worked bolsters due to arrive tomorrow. I bought my dad a navy blue 125th anniversary Peanut but I haven't seen it yet since I didn't want to cut the shrink-wrap on the aluminium gift box. After seeing the piss poor job on the red bone I ordered I feel like Case should offer some kind of buy-back program for knives that never should have made it past quality control in the first time. Hope you get a good one whatever you choose, I've been extremely happy with all my other Case knives.
