Mine darkens from regular use. In this pic you can see the 2 bk11s...one has new scales, the other used. Big difference.

well I did the first round of leather dye. looks great! Will probably put another coat on later.

Careful on the oil if you have a leather sheath. A small bit from contact is prob fine but I wouldn't try rubbing the leather down with it. I'm not speaking from experience only that I've read that mineral oil shouldn't be used on leather. I don't use veg oil on anything. I find that it gets sticky and builds up and I hear it can get moldy.

I've gathered up the resin and burlap for home made scales but I'm still floundering on a press design. Not sure if I should make a squared mold or just press it between two boards

$1.48/roll was a steal! 15' each. Looks like I can make 1 set per roll. I'm considering adding denim or linen to make it two toned and it may double my material to 6 sets. I plan on a complete write up on the process.

Smashed mine between two boards, cranked down tight with c-clamps. Worked well.
These have all been cleaned with mineral spirits and rubbed with mineral oil.



My only trouble was resin seeping out and adhering to the wood. Tried both plastic wrap and waxed paper to contain it - neither held it all in, and both got very stuck to the stuff. Blue painter's tape sprayed with Pam or silicone lube seemed to work best for me.

What color rit dye did you use for that if you don't mind my asking?

Will rubbing bee's wax on micarta affect the color much?

I think it was just brown or maybe dark brown.
