Darrel Ralph Mad Max

I've been doing some research on this knife for a while, and found lots of old posts with good reviews, and a few with pictures. Many of you mentioned that yours was suppose to arrive in the near future.

Got the pics off of Darrel's site, was wondering if any of you owners could post pictures of yours and how much you paid? Thanks

Called earlier today, asking for the current wait time, hoping its not half my lifetime

Your best bet with prices is to email Darrel. He's very good about responding promptly, and he can detail how much each possible option would cost.

I received mine about 3 weeks ago and it has been my daily carry ever since. I can't say enough good things about it. Lockup is LOCKUP, this blade ain't going nowhere when that handle slab slams over. The blade is sharp with perfect grind lines and finish. Love the way it opens even if I did have to practice it a bit. I just can not get over how well this knife feels in my hand! It is so well balanced for such a large knife, not at all awkward.
I can't post pictures YET. Believe me I will when I learn how. I had ordered mine with the ceramic peen finish and it was $595.00.
As far as a waiting period................just check with Darrel.

P.S. If anybody checks with Darrel be siure to tell him how nice a guy I am and how it would be really neat if he dropped everything he was doing and did me up one of the smaller MADD MAXX's! LOL!!!

Darrel's price is $595 for the 5.5" version. He is instructing the purveyors to not sell them for les, out of respect for his direct customers. He has a price list of options on his website. The best thing is to go to the scource and E-mail Darrel. I love my MM prototype and am waiting on a MM dagger blade.

Wel, I just talked to him and ordered a Mad Max with Dagger blade and Ceramic Peen finish on the handle. What a great guy, you all were right. He took the time to answer my questions about the options, and explained the knife to me. I can't wait to get it, especially to see the ceramic peen finish, it looks awesome in the pictures on his site.

I had one of the original MM in the ceramic peen finish. It was a great knife and I loved it but it had a couple of problems. I hated sending it back but it became impossible to unlock at times. Darrel has had it for a few weeks now and I hope to get it back in a reasonable amount of time and working as it should. I'll report back to you guys when I receive it. I'm sure Darrel will make it right and I can't stand being without it!

I'm told that my dagger will be ready at the end of the week. I opted for the anodized purple handle similar to Keith's but after studying Darrel's website I wanted more. So I emailed him and asked for some gold nugget work on the butt and around the pivot pin. He will hopefully post pics. Should be smokin hot!

Peter,
You are going to have to post some pics of that one!
Dark,
I have the ceramic peen finished blade on mine and like it a lot. It is actually a two-tone finish. The flats have a satin finish in the 400 grit or less range while the rest of the blade has a frosted look to it. Looks VERY COOL!!

Did any of ya'll happen to mention what I asked about to Darell? Come on now, 'fess up, surely someone did????

Got my dagger style, marked #1, about a week ago and am loving it. It is building up a callous on my thumb because at times it can be very hard to open. I sure hope that opening gets easier, because sending it back for adjustments will be a pain.

I use my forefinger to open mine. The thumbstuds are actually bladestops, just as you said Dark. I have disassembled mine and put some Chris Reeve flourinated grease on the pivot. SMOOTH as a banana peel, and I even increased the blade tension a bit since I like it TIGHT!

I do not have trouble opening the knife, I have trouble closing it. Sometimes it is impossible to release the lock with my thumb and I have to push the blade back to relieve pressure on the lock. This seems to be the same problem that Gene had with his knife, as was mentioned in an earlier post in this thread.

Darrel emailed me that my dagger, #3 of the protos is going out today. I'm like a kid the night before Christmas. I can't recall having this level of anticipation over much of anything in a long time. I can't wait to see the nugget work and to finally hold in my hand an example of the much tauted Ralph craftsmanship.

Keith, I'll be curious to see if my knife has the sticky lock problem that you describe. No such problems with yours Art?

Peter,
No problems. Of course mine is tight also and it can be a thumb bruiser to push over the lock. That tells me that this knife is going to have to have some STRONG force applied to it before this lock fails! I don't see it as a problem though. Keep in mind since I can't test the others they may well be harder to close than mine is. Just know that this is quite a knife and I go NOWHERE without carrying it. Have received an ATCF this past week and I can't even get myself to carry it even one day! Also got a Crawford Wortac comming and doubt if it will see any carry time for a long while.

Peter don't forget.......POST A PIC OF THAT BAD BOY WHEN IT GETS THERE!!!

Just wanted to chime in here....Darrel mailed me today to let me know my Mad Max is on its way back, I had sent mine in so he could increase the lock tension as mine pushed over "to easy" with thumb.
I am awaiting one of those big 7" gibbs specials with the dagger blade...has been tuff being with out the max for these past several days....I miss flipping that HUGE blade out....Darrel also did me a favor in that I asked if he could get it back to me a little sooner so I cold take it to Oregon knife show coming up on the 20th of April...(wanted to show it off)....that was yesterday..today was the notice that it was on its way....hows that for customer service!!

OK! OK! OK! OK! OK!
The MM is the best****ultimate****super****iwantit****hardtoget****andsoone****weallwant****knife!
But please PLEASE *P*L*E*A*S*E* will you think of the members in this forum that need there money not only to buy knives, but also to feed a wife, some kids, and for me also a old but always hungry dog!
Over 500$ is a lot of money (to much) for me, so Darrel please look for a agreement to permit some factory made MM in the near future.

One question, for those of you that have an anodized handle, does it have a rough sandy feel, or is it more baby butt smooth ? I have never like the feel of aluminum when it was anodized, but don't think I've ever felt titanium anodized. Thanks
